How is your baby sleeping these days? Or perhaps you’re still recovering from that landmark stage of parenting…
It’s always hard to believe when you hear your peers say their newborns are sleeping soundly through the night, and most of us are probably left wondering if remedies are available to aid with our children’s slumbers.
One option is Babies’ Magic Tea brand Baby Sleep Gripe Water, but parents and caregivers are now being warned to stop using a recalled lot of a product sold online after federal testing found undeclared alcohol, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration reports.
Pacific Health Sciences is voluntarily recalling Lot 25122bw of the dietary supplement sold in 4-ounce bottles, according to the recent FDA announcement. The recalled lot has a best-before date of December 2028, and the lot number reportedly appears on the bottom of the box and on a side panel of the bottle.
The product is marketed on its packaging as helping babies with “better sleep,” as well as providing relief from gas, bloating, constipation and acid reflux, per Fox Business.
“FDA testing of this lot identified ethanol, methanol, and isopropanol that were not declared on the product label,” the FDA report published October 7 reads, regarding the reason for recall. “Measured levels were approximately 8.3% ethanol, 0.35% methanol, and 0.48% isopropanol. These substances were not listed on the label. Their presence may pose a risk depending on the amount consumed and the age and body weight of the person using the product.”
Organic alcohols such as ethanol, methanol, and isopropanol are known to impair normal functioning of the central nervous system, while infant ethanol exposure has been linked to long-term developmental consequences,” reads the FDA’s hazard statement. “Exposure to the amounts recommended on this product’s packaging can induce drowsiness, incoordination, behavioral changes, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. Exposure to higher amounts can increase risk of respiratory depression and other serious adverse health consequences.”
The affected gripe water was distributed to Secrets of Tea and later sold through online retailers, including the Secrets of Tea website and Amazon.
