On October 11, 1996, The X-Files made history by releasing the most famous (and shocking) episode in the entire series, stunning viewers with the raw intensity of season 4’s classic episode, “Home.”
Written by Glen Morgan and James Wong, “Home” followed the same basic format as most X-Files episodes, unfolding as a traditional monster of the week narrative with FBI agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully (David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson, respectively) investigating an unusual paranormal case.
In contrast to most X-Files episodes, however, “Home” featured a far grittier atmosphere, thanks in large part to its inclusion of incest and altogether darker subject matter.
Today, “Home” remains the only episode in The X-Files series to receive a TV-MA rating, along with being the only episode in the show to receive a viewer discretion advisory warning.
Interestingly, in spite of its major critical success, the episode was also banned for three years from replaying on TV, although the ban was later lifted and the episode has since returned to streaming and regular syndication.
Earlier this year, X-Files creator Chris Carter spoke about “Home”s notoriety in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, mentioning a “screaming phone call” he received from the network after the episode aired reprimanding him for its disturbing nature.
“Glen Morgan and James Wong had done an episode called ‘Home’,” Carter said. “It’s probably it’s one of the favorite, if not the most favorite, episodes of the show. It’s a very scary episode, but this was in season 4. By that time, the studio had left us alone. I don’t know how we snuck it past the censors, but it aired and I got a screaming call from an executive the next day that the episode would never air again … that we had gone too far.”
“All of a sudden, all eyes were on us,” Carter continued. “It affected the show going forward. We were held to a much stricter standard.”
