More Than 82,000 Rechargeable Hand Warmers Sold at Target, Home Depot, and Amazon Recalled Over Fire Risk ...Saudi Arabia

News by : (Parade) -

The summer heat waves have finally come and gone, with those recent tropical storms certainly bringing down temperatures of late in certain parts of the U.S.

Electronic hand warmers have become popular over the years as everyday gizmos to effectively heat you up during the chilly weather — but the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission just announced that more than 82,000 rechargeable units have been recalled over fire and burn hazards.

The recall affects roughly 77,000 Kobayashi’s HotHands-branded rechargeable hand warmers and about 5,500 Gobi Heat-branded rechargeable hand warmers — both of which are seen stocked on the shelves of Target, The Home Depot and Amazon.

Kobayashi’s HotHands hand warmers are white and orange, while the Gobi Heat hand warmers are black and gray. Both brands’ hand warmers come in packs of two that can be magnetically joined together and include a charging cable, per Fox Business.

The recalled HotHands hand warmers can be identified by model number H163650, while the recalled Gobi Heat hand warmers’ model number is UT3053.

“The lithium-ion battery and electrical components in the recalled hand warmers can overheat and ignite, posing a risk of serious injury from fire and burn hazards,” per the CPSC’s recall notice from earlier this month.

Fortunately, no injuries have been reported in connection with either brand’s hand warmers.

Consumers should stop using the recalled products immediately and contact the respective companies for a full refund, according to the commission.

“Consumers should then dispose of the recalled product with the lithium-ion battery, in accordance with applicable local and state hazardous waste regulations,” the CPSC says.

The recall report continues, “Recalled lithium-ion batteries must be disposed of differently than other batteries, because they present a greater risk of fire. Your municipal household hazardous waste (HHW) collection center may accept this recalled lithium-ion battery or device for disposal.”
