1971 Rock Song, Included in One of The ‘Greatest Soundtracks of All Time,’ Became a Fleetwood Mac Hidden Gem ...Saudi Arabia

Before Fleetwood Mac became superstars with their late-’70s albums and hit songs, their fifth studio album featured a soft rock track that would later appear in one of the most celebrated music films.

“Future Games” is one of the band’s hidden gems in their catalog that was released in 1971 as part of the album of the same name. Critics praised Fleetwood Mac’s ability to “build climax upon climax,” as the track and album itself marked a shift for the group.

At the time, Peter Green had already departed the band earlier that year, and guitarist and vocalist Jeremy Spencer also left. The band’s secretary, Judy Wong, suggested Bob Welch as their guitarist after his band, Head East, had broken up. The album and “Future Games” was one of the first to include Welch and Christine McVie as full members.

“Future Games” was written by Welch on a two-track tape recorded before he ever joined Fleetwood Mac. He had written it while in Paris, France, after the end of Head East. At the time, Welch wasn’t feeling confident and was in a “pretty insecure mood” when he wrote the song.

“When I wrote ‘Future Games’, the Vietnam War was still quite strong, they had the riots at the Democratic Convention two years before; Nixon was at the White House, they were giving people eighty-year sentences in Texas for possession of one marijuana joint, and the FBI was wiretapping your grandmother,” he explained.

The song would make its way to Fleetwood Mac after he received the call from Wong while he was living with a couple in a shared apartment. “Future Games” was actually the first song to be recorded by Welch for the band and became a concert staple for some time. It was taken off the setlist later on when Welch was replaced by Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham.

While the album and the track failed to make a notable impact on the charts, it was included in the hit film Almost Famous. The Cameron Crowe Oscar-winning comedy-drama is often tagged as one of the best films of all time with cult classic status.

Almost Famous was included in Rolling Stone‘s list of movies with the “greatest soundtracks of all time.” It ranked at No. 25 and transported viewers to the “bittersweet heart of early-Seventies rock & roll.”

The Fleetwood Mac track was included in the film and soundtrack and heard during a scene as the lead guitarist of a band gives a monologue to a group of high schoolers at a party. Unlike other tracks in the film, “Future Games” didn’t get the same resurgence or popularity. Some called it a “pity,” and it was a “stoned, shimmering, melancholy fabulousness is ripe for rediscovery.”
