Back in 2022, Red Hot Chili Peppers’ bassist Michael “Flea” Balzary put his La Crescenta house on the market for nearly $9.8 million. But after a failed sale, he is trying again, but as a rental.
Flea is now seeking $5.8 million for the 5.7-acre property in the La Crescenta-Montrose neighborhood, which is near Glendale in the San Fernando Valley. It’s about $1.5 million more compared to what he paid for in 2018 when he bought the home with his then-partner Frankie Rayder.
About 20 miles North of Downtown Los Angeles, the property includes two separate houses. The first was built in 1953 by architect Richard Neutra for his secretary, Dorothy Serulnic, and her husband, George. The second home, which was built in 2009 by architect Michael Maltzan for Lari Pittman and Roy Dowell, includes an outdoor movie theater, sweeping mountain and city views, an office, a den and large kitchen for hosting and entertaining. The two buildings are connected by a driveway, and feature an “open-air entertainment pavilion set amid a scrupulously groomed desert garden.”
Described by the listing agent as “your own midcentury space station right here in Los Angeles,” the property is less of a standard home, and more of a multi-sensory artistic retreat. Flea, who is currently working on a new album with the Red Hot Chili Peppers, also released his debut solo album, Honora, this past March.
“I’m making music that occupies its own place in the world and that feels good to me,” he told NPR in late April.

Flea is one of the two original remaining members of Red Hot Chili Peppers. The rock group was formed in Los Angeles in 1982 and has sold over 120 million records worldwide and has become one of the top-selling bands of all time. In addition, Red Hot Chili Peppers have won six Grammy Awards, were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2012, and received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame four years ago. The band has released 13 studio albums so far, with their most recent projects being Unlimited Love and Return of the Dream Canteen, both in 2022.
The 63-year-old bassist was born in Melbourne, Australia, but then he and his family moved to Rye, New York, when he was just four years old. His parents got divorced, but his mom remarried to jazz musician Walter Abdul Urban Jr, who introduced Flea and his sister Karyn to the world of jazz. Flea and his family eventually moved to Los Angeles, where he became fascinated with the trumpet. It wasn’t until his teens when Flea was introduced to rock music.
In 1982, Flea joined his high school classmates Anthony Kiedis, Hillel Slovak, and Jack Irons to make the Tony Flow and the Miraculously Majestic Masters of Mayhem. After performing in various venues in LA, they renamed themselves to the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
“We just put together the Chili Peppers in that moment like it wasn’t like we had the Chili Peppers. And from the first show people were like the first note people were just losing their minds going crazy and we were losing our minds going crazy. And it just felt magical,” Flea told Rick Beato about his early days in a podcast. “The next thing you know we had two songs and three and four and right away it was just kind of people really wanted to see it there were early on lines around the block.”
After releasing Honora on March 27, which honors jazz and the trumpet, Flea is back in the studio with the Red Hot Chili Peppers working on their 14th album. Current members Kiedis, John Frusciante and Chad Smith are actively writing and recording new music together at Frusciante’s home.
