In a world of wacky brand partnerships and unexpected collabs, nothing seems off-limits these days. Of course sardines and hand cream go together, and we definitely want our Skittles to taste like mustard. It’s practically par for the course to see our favorite brands wade into uncharted waters, but for the most part, they stay in their respective lanes. At least most of the time.
Although a limited-edition collab isn’t the same as an all-out merger, we typically don’t expect brands in entirely different categories to even consider teaming up. But Starbucks is reportedly exploring a move that could shake up the entire industry. According to a report by The Financial Times, the coffee behemoth is considering acquiring Chipotle for a whopping $41 billion.

A Record Breaking Merger in the Making
View this post on InstagramThat’s right, folks, Starbies could be getting into the burrito game. This definitely wasn’t on our bingo card. If the deal moves forward, it would bring current Starbucks CEO and former Chipotle CEO Brian Niccol back into the fold of the brand he left only two years ago. And it would also become the largest restaurant buyout to date, surpassing Burger King’s landmark $11.4 billion purchase of Tim Hortons in 2014.
What’s the end game?
But what does all this mean for your next burrito? For now, nothing. The deal is only being explored at the moment, but if it moves forward, it would unite two of the most recognizable fast-casual brands into one mega-conglomerate. Does that mean we’ll start seeing burritos on the menu at Starbucks or lattes on the menu at Chipotle? Probably not, but it’s fair to expect a little cross pollination especially when they have a similar hand-crafted approach to their respective products.
Despite the news being mostly speculative (for now) customers are already having strong reactions to the potential merger with several social media users weighing in. “Pumpkin spice burritos, the final horseman of the apocalypse,” quipped one fan. “Absolutely not,” someone else said. Another person joked about Niccol’s decision to potentially acquire his old workplace saying, “When you flex on your old job master level.”
While it isn’t exactly clear what the motivations are for the potential merger, you’ve got to admit it is kind of a flex to straight up buy your old job just because. Only time will tell if the deal actually materializes, but definitely we’ll be keeping an eye for any major updates. Let us know your thoughts in the comments!
