While calling ‘dibs’ on parking in snowy weather is in Chicago’s DNA, it’s not technically allowed.
“It is one of the many traditions I can get behind, but you also gotta pick your battles on when to use it,” said Archer Heights resident Adam Schutz.
For decades, residents have relied on random items to protect a precious parking space. One that is cleanly shoveled after several inches of snow.
“Pretty much once the snow came people cleared it,” Schutz explained “With a tub, wheelchair out there too and they don’t want it to be stolen or taken.
Is dibs legal? No. In fact, Chicago city code actually prohibits it.
But is that stopping people? Also no.
Crews can’t be everywhere picking up items, so they ask you to be neighborly.
“It is a Chicago tradition. There is tradition here in this city,” said Streets and Sanitation Commissioner Cole Stallard. “We’re still talking about the ’85 Bears. We know it’s not going to go away and people have fun with it.”
Stallard has seen it all.
From mannequins to milk crates and buckets to bicycles, he said one of his favorite things to come out of “dibs” is a meme of Senator Bernie Sanders.
“When I saw him sitting in that chair, I was like wow. We made it,” Stallard said with a laugh. “It’s like – we’re getting to that point. And it is people that are creative!”
While dibs can be light-hearted, it comes with its share of calls of complaints.
Since November, the city has received more than 2,000 requests to come pick up the junk used to reserve spots on the streets.
“We’ve seen creative things, funny things, but just know we will make a statement toward the end of the season.” Stallard said. “You want your grandma’s furniture or kids toy car you use? We will collect it at a point and it will end up in the garbage.”
