While current Dancing with the Stars hosts Julianne Hough and Alfonso Ribeiro have been at the helm of the ballroom competition show for quite some time, former host Samantha Harris recently shared the story behind why she was let go from the show.
In a recent episode of the McBride Rewind podcast, Harris explained that while she hosted the show alongside Tom Bergeron from Season 2 to Season 9, the network told her that, starting Season 10, the show was going in a different direction to mark the milestone.
View this post on Instagram“I get that call, it was my executive producer, and he said, ‘Samantha, I have some really disappointing news,’ and I knew,” she said. “My heart dropped, the tears started flowing before he even got it out of his mouth, which was ‘We’re not renewing you for next season.'”
Harris, who was also a host of Entertainment Tonight at the time, claims her role was cut because “the president of the network wants some sort of ‘Whoa! This is brand new Season 10′” energy.
Speaking highly of her co-host Bergeron, she called him ABC’s “darling” who had been “in the game for probably 20 years…so obviously, I was the expendable one.”
Brooke Burke, who was also a contestant on Season 7 of DWTS, ultimately replaced Harris in the show’s 10th season. Other co-hosts who later joined Bergeron on the ballroom floor included Erin Andrews and Tyra Banks.

However, Harris returned as an audience member for the show’s 10th anniversary and another time at her daughters’ request, as the show has found a new generation of fans.
As for whether she’d ever return as a host, she didn’t say no, although she praised Hough and Ribeiro for the job they’re doing.
“I would go back in a heartbeat, especially to host the show,” she said, noting that her daughter has said, “Mom, you need to be back on TV on this show. They need to hire you back as the host.” ?
