Smokers could be fined for smoking on streets in downtown palatine as enforcement on a new rule began this week.
In a recent village meeting, officials said law enforcement would soon begin ticketing violators who smoke outside of “designated smoking areas” in the northwest suburb’s downtown.
Village Manager Reid Ottesen said “informal enforcement” has been underway, but official measures will be taken to ensure the new guidelines are being followed, including citations or warnings.
“I will say I have talked to every establishment owner and they are looking forward to our help with this,” Ottesen said. “They have tried to get people to relocate, it hasn’t always been successful. It’s not something that we relish doing but we’ve created an environment that we want to have families, we want to have people going through with strollers, we don’t need people standing outside other businesses or their own business smoking. There’s a designated area. We recognize that that’s a choice that some people have made and we’ve provided, I think, a relatively nice area for them to go within a short walk of where they are.”
The designated area sits off the main sidewalks and smokers can be within 300 feet of it to be within the guidelines.
“Not filtering over into the parking lot or the other public spaces,” Ottesen said.
