Jenna Johnson thanked fans for their support following the live Dancing with the Stars show on Oct. 13. In the early morning hours of Oct. 14, the veteran pro dancer, who is partnered with Glee and Grey’s Anatomy star Harry Shum Jr. in the 35th season of the ABC ballroom competition, posted to her Instagram stories with a message to her followers.
Johnson, 32, captioned a photo of herself with tears in her eyes while holding a tissue against her cheek.
“Just had a good cry reading all your beautiful comments and messages. Love you guys,” the DWTS pro wrote.
came hours after Johnson’s choreography for her Week 5 Samba with Shum was heavily criticized by judge Carrie Ann Inaba.
After the two performed the Samba to Usher‘s “Yeah!” during DWTS’ Super Bowl Night, Inaba said, “If that was a halftime show, amazing, I loved every minute of it. But it’s a samba.”
“You need to put more content into your dances,” she continued, adding that she spied a “lift” during the routine.
When Johnson questioned the lift, Inaba pulled out the rulebook. “Yeah, it was a lift,” she said. “A lift is any movement during which one of the dancers has both feet off the floor at the same time with the assistance or support of their partner. Yeah, lift.”
Shum Jr. and Johnson appeared dumbfounded as judge Derek Hough attempted to defuse the awkward situation by saying, “Dang…I feel like I got told off.”
In the skybox, Johnson told DWTS co-host Julianne Hough that she had misunderstood the definition of a lift.
“I totally understand. I thought it was if you lifted your partner,” Johnson said. “But I totally hear Carrie Ann. I will take it. Sure.”
Johnson and Shum Jr. ultimately received 33 out of 40 points from the judges, and plenty of support from fans who voted to keep them safe.
In comments posted to YouTube, fans reacted to Johnson’s choreography for the samba.
“This dance was amazing!” one fan wrote. “I don’t care what Carrie Anne said. They slayed. Harry deserves better. Proud of my team!”
“The tough love tonight will only push them harder to stay on theme next time! They had the most halftime show energy though!” another fan wrote of Johnson and Shum Jr.
During DWTS Season 34, Inaba wasn’t as picky about illegal lifts when future winner Robert Irwin competed with Witney Carson. “Who cares about lifts?” Inaba said last year following Irwin’s foxtrot. “No one at this point. … Bravo!”
