British rock band Coldplay was hard at work on their second studio album in the early 2000s. Ten songs were already written for the record before the entire band opted to collaborate on a new song. Despite them thinking it was too late to add anything to the work that would become A Rush of Blood to the Head, they recorded a demo and kept it.
This demo was the track that would go on to be one of Coldplay’s signature songs: “Clocks.“
In the nearly 25 years since the release of A Rush of Blood to the Head, “Clocks” has been sampled numerous times and subject to massive critical acclaim. The track won the Grammy Award for Record of the Year and was included on Rolling Stone’s list of the “500 Greatest Songs of All Time.”
In addition to the aformentioned accolades, the song is widely respected as one of the best alt-rock songs out today. In the ranking of the “Greatest Adult Alternative Songs of All Time” on Billboard, “Clocks” was placed second on the list, only behind “One Headlight” by The Wallflowers.
The road to getting “Clocks” on the radio was not quite as smooth as Coldplay likely would have hoped. Because of the band’s disastifaction with the album they’d recorded (with Chris Martin even going so far as to call what they had presented to the label as “rubbish”), the group ended up delaying the release. The band’s manager at the time ended up encouraging them to push for “Clocks” to make the second record, a decision that ended up paying off.
Music critics praised “Clocks” as one of the highlights on the album. Goldmine, an American music magazine, called the song “a stunningly pretty piano rocker, absolutely perfect and is simply one of the best songs of the decade.” U2’s Bono has even gone so far as to credit “Clocks” as one of the 60 songs that saved his life.
Whatever the path to recording, it’s safe to say that “Clocks” has gone on to be synonymous with Coldplay, and one of the greatest in the genre according to critics and listeners alike.
