Actress Anne Hathaway has become a beloved figure in the entertainment industry since her first performances in the early 2000s in movies like The Princess Diaries and Ella Enchanted. Today, with more than 40 film credits to her name, her performances have become synonymous with emotional vulnerability and impressive flexibility as a performer.
With more than 110 nominations and 46 wins under her belt, Hathaway is one of Hollywood’s biggest stars. Yet one of her most acclaimed movies is a relatively underrated, indie darling that almost no one talks about.
Recently, Variety set out to rank the best of the best when it came to Hathaway’s impressive performances on screen. Taking the number one spot on the publication’s list was her portrayal of Kym in Jenny Lumet and Jonathan Demme’s Rachel Getting Married.
Of her performance in the movie, Variety wrote: “There is no better display of Hathaway’s mastery of emotion, careening from tears and anguish to manipulation and charm, all in service of a bottomless well of feeling.”
Rachel Getting Married had its world premiere at the 65th Venice International Film Festival before being released in theaters in October of 2008. For her role in the film, Hathaway received her first Academy Award nomination for Best Actress. She would later go on to win the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her role of Fantine in Les Misérables.
In Rachel Getting Married, Kym (played by Hathaway) is released from rehab for a handful of days in order to attend her sister’s wedding. Kym’s presence at the event is met with tension following her actions prior to going into rehab in order to deal with her addiction and acts that occurred while she was actively using. Over the course of her time at home, traumatic events are uncovered, and the members of the family are forced to confront things they’ve yet to talk about and how to move forward together.
Rachel Getting Married is available to stream on Netflix, Apple TV, Amazon Prime, and YouTube.
