In the nearly 60 years since Joni Mitchell released her debut album, 1968’s Song to a Seagull, the iconic singer-songwriter has accomplished just about everything any musician could ever hope for in her career. But one goal has remained elusive for the Canadian-born Grammy winner…until now.
On Tuesday, Oct. 13, Mitchell shared a photo of herself on Instagram holding an American flag while standing in front of United States and Department of Homeland Security flags. In the pic, she’s wearing a dark blue button-down shirt with a red design and a matching red hat, along with a pair of sunglasses and a beautiful smile. In addition to the photo, Mitchell also posted a brief clip of herself being called up to be sworn in as an American citizen.
“A journey that began 62 years ago,” she wrote in her caption.
View this post on InstagramCommenters were quick to congratulate Mitchell on finally becoming an American citizen after living primarily in California for years.
“Some people become citizens. Others become part of a country’s soul. Joni did both,” one fan declared.
“Well thank God, we in the U.S. need some more Jonis,” a second person pointed out, with a third adding, “This is so wonderful. I have tears in my eyes!!”
“Congrats, Joan! Just in time to vote!” wrote Mitchell’s old friend and fellow music legend, Graham Nash.

While neither Mitchell nor her reps have offered any details at this point, Nash’s comment highlights the timeliness of this latest milestone.
In 2024, during a “Joni Jam” at the Hollywood Bowl, Mitchell expressed regret over not being able to vote, as Variety reported. First, she inserted Donald Trump‘s name into the lyrics of her song “Dog Eat Dog” (following the lyrics’ reference to “snakebite evangelists and racketeers and big wig financiers”). Then, when the song ended, she made her feelings on the President very clear.
“I wish I could vote. I’m a Canadian. I’m one of those lousy immigrants,” she quipped, adding, “F—k Donald Trump.”
Mitchell was met with a standing ovation.
