Although you surely remember Kelsey Grammer from his time helping people with their mental health as psychiatrist Dr. Frasier Crane on Frasier (as well as on Cheers and Wings), he’s now set to appear in a new show as a character dealing with different kinds of health-related issues.
Pops, which is being developed by NBC and written by Chicago Med writer-producer Danny Weiss, will see Grammer as both an executive producer and its star. The actor will “[play] the title character, a man aged out of a successful career who, in desperate need of a fresh start, jumps into the chaotic world of emergency medicine alongside first responders half his age,” according to Deadline. “The project is based on the true-life story of Ed Levien, a Maryland resident who became a volunteer EMT in his 60s after a successful career in advertising. Nicknamed ‘Pops’ by his younger co-workers, he spent 12 years as [an] EMT until retiring last fall at the age of 76.”
This new project comes as fans get ready to see Grammer as Dr. Henry “Hank” McCoy in Marvel’s upcoming film Avengers: Doomsday, which is scheduled to come out on December 18. The movie will also feature the return of Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans, Anthony Mackie, Tom Hiddleston, Sebastian Stan, Letitia Wright, and Paul Rudd. That’s not to mention Robert Downey Jr. as Victor von Doom, a.k.a. Doctor Doom.
As for Frasier, it ran for an impressive 11 seasons from 1993 to 2004, and starred Grammer alongside David Hyde Pierce, Jane Leeves, Peri Gilpin, and the late John Mahoney. The series earned Grammer four Emmys, while the show and cast took home 37 of the coveted industry awards, which set a record for a scripted series at the time. Its success is surely one of the reasons why a revival series, also called Frasier, premiered on Paramount+ in 2023.
