The Weld County commissioners recently agreed to award the Colorado Department of Transportation $9.4 million to construct a new bridge southwest of Eaton at the intersection of Weld County Road 33 and Colo. 392.

CDOT has determined that Bridge 33/68A, which was initially built in 1971, has become structurally deficient. The bridge is still safe for residents to travel on, but if the county does not address the issue soon, it could lead to greater problems in the future, possibly resulting in multiple closures for repair work, according to a county news release.

“Roads always come to mind when people think of the county’s transportation infrastructure, but our bridges are equally important,” Weld County Commissioner Chair Perry Buck said in the release.

This year, two bridges were improved as part of an effort to rebuild Weld 29 between Weld 74 and Colo. 14. Work continues to rebuild Bridge 51/68A, located southeast of Eaton.

CDOT will complete the necessary right-of-way agreements, relocate utilities and obtain a crossing agreement with New Cache La Poudre Irrigating Company. Additionally, the department will perform all design work and construction.

“We maintain 429 bridges countywide, and from time to time, heavy maintenance or replacements are needed,” Director of the Weld County Department of Public Works Curtis Hall said in the release.

A start date has yet to be determined for the construction of the new bridge, and it’s not anticipated to begin for the next several years, according to Hall.
