Denver Nuggets rotation expecting changes with Spencer Jones’ impending return ...Middle East

Denver Nuggets forward Spencer Jones is off the injury report and expected to make his return to the Nuggets rotation on Saturday afternoon vs the Indiana Pacers in Mexico City.

According to Bennett Durando of the Denver Post, the Nuggets and Jones have been targeting Saturday as a return date for Jones following an extensive recovery from a hamstring strain.

The Nuggets will certainly be happy to have Jones return to the mix, offering a blend of defensive skills, three-point spacing, and consistency to Denver’s rotation.

Although, many Nuggets fans may be wondering how Denver will try to incorporate Jones back into the mix, especially given the impressive performances of rookies Trevon Brazile and Bryce Hopkins in Jones’ absence.

Here’s my quick assessment of Denver’s rotation and Jones’ place within it:

Denver Nuggets projected rotation for Saturday, November 7th vs the Indiana Pacers that includes returning forward Spencer Jones.

Assuming the starters all place their expected roles and DeMar DeRozan plays following missing last Wednesday’s game with back spasms, the Nuggets will be hard-pressed to include all three of Jones, Brazile, and Hopkins in the rotation. Denver can either use an 11-man rotation to include all three and get ready with substitution patterns, or they can cut one of those forwards out of the mix.

In the above case, the Nuggets cut Hopkins out and use a 10-man rotation, staggering Cam Johnson with the second unit. Brazile enters the game first and plays extended minutes next to Jokic, then leaves the floor in the non-Jokic minutes for a chunk of time. DeRozan slides to backup shooting guard with Johnson and Jones at the forward spots to space the floor.

Nikola Jokic and Jamal Murray continue to play exceptionally high minutes in this case, while Marvin Bagley III and Tyus Jones serve as backup center and point guard options respectively. Very little changes for those minutes patterns.

In his first game back, I’m projecting 14 minutes for Spencer Jones. That could end up being higher if he continues to play well, and it’s easy to see him digging into the minutes Brazile has played as a result. Nuggets fans may not be happy about it, but the players and coaching staff trust Jones and will want to get him opportunities to reestablish last season’s performance through minutes and play time.

How it all works out remains to be seen, and the above rotation will likely be wrong. The Nuggets could choose to go with an all-bench unit. They could also play 11 players to try to reduce minutes even further. In all likelihood though, the Nuggets will be forced to make difficult choices with their second unit that may lead to some short term growing pains.

Or, Jones comes back, shoots very well while playing his role defensively, and the Nuggets continue to find success with a surprisingly capable bench ensemble.
