The Denver Broncos will be heading to Carolina to take on the Panthers on Sunday without several defensive players, including two starters.
Injury report updates, Pat Bryant set to return, Denver’s depth has been one of the biggest strengths, and the relationship dynamic between Bo Nix and Sean Payton are all in today’s recap.
Denver Broncos rule out Brandon Jones, Uwazurike, Abrams-Draine vs. Panthers
After not practicing all week, the Denver Broncos will be facing the Carolina Panthers without starting safety Brandon Jones, defensive lineman Eyioma Uwazurike, and backup cornerback Kris Abrams-Draine.
All three players were DNP on Friday’s official injury report. Veteran safety Talanoa Hufanga was present for the second straight day of practice on Friday, but he is listed as questionable for Sunday’s game.
It wouldn’t surprise me if Hufanga ultimately is inactive for Sunday’s game in a similar approach the Broncos took with Patrick Surtain II against the Arizona Cardinals. I’d expect Taylor Rapp and Devon Key to start at safety, with JL Skinner also playing snaps there in certain packages.
Outside linebacker Dondrea Tillman popped up on the injury report with a hip injury, but was listed as a full participant on the practice report, although his official status for Sunday’s game is listed as questionable.
Broncos final injury report vs. Panthers
Safety Talanoa Hufanga – ankle – limited – questionable. Safety Brandon Jones – hamstring – DNP – OUT. Defensive lineman Eyioma Uwazurike – shoulder – DNP – OUT. Cornerback Kris Abrams-Draine – ankle – DNP – OUT. Defensive lineman Zach Allen – NIR-rest – full participation – will play. Wide receiver Courtland Sutton – NIR-rest – full participation – will play. Wide receiver Jaylen Waddle – chest – full participation – will play. Wide receiver Pat Bryant – ankle – full participation – questionable/will play. Outside linebacker Dondrea Tillman – hip – full participation – questionable.Pat Bryant will come off of IR and play vs. Panthers
Broncos wide receiver Pat Bryant had a strong week of practice this past week in his first action back from an ankle injury suffered in Week 4 that placed him on injured reserve.
He was a full participant in practice all week and will come off IR, which head coach Sean Payton confirmed following practice when asked.
In a corresponding roster move, the Broncos released veteran safety Taylor Rapp, but it’s only a procedural move, and he will sign to the practice squad on Saturday and is expected to be elevated for his third and final allotted elevation.
Broncos depth has stood out despite injuries
Depth has been one of the Broncos’ biggest strengths this season, in particular at safety and cornerback this season. Whether it was when Patrick Surtain II, Riley Moss, Talanoa Hufanga, or Brandon Jones dealing with an injury, the Broncos have tapped into their depth with Jahdae Barron, Kris Abrams-Draine, JL Skinner, Devon Key, and veteran Taylor Rapp.
Surtain and Moss are back in tandem for the second consecutive week with Sunday’s game against Carolina, but with Jones ruled out and veteran safety Hufanga listed as questionable, that depth could be relied on once again.
Broncos head coach Sean Payton highlighted how important their strategy is when it comes to drafting and acquiring the right players.
“I think it gets back to drafting,” Payton told us today. “Sometimes drafting to strength is a good thing. There are certain positions that are harder to find obviously in the offseason. So there have been just a number of guys. You’re always hoping to, when you’re putting the roster together, you know that it’s a long season. You’re hoping you’re developing players that are going to have to play sometimes, maybe before you’re ready to. Fortunately we’ve had some of those guys step up and play well.”
That trend will likely continue here on Sunday.
Bo Nix, Payton’s growing relationship between QB and playcaller continues to evolve with experience
Tom Brady recently talked about the importance of the relationship between the playcaller and quarterback as the game evolves on Sundays. Since Payton selected Bo Nix in the 2024 NFL Draft, the two have grown exponentially together over their first three seasons together.
From Day 1 to now, Payton and Nix have both figured out what they like, what they don’t like, and how they can marry both of their preferences in terms of plays as the course of a game unfolds and in the weekly preparation.
“We were just talking on the field about getting on this flight,” Payton said. “I want to know the plays that he loves. I want to kind of relay the plays that I love, and then let’s ditch the plays that neither of us love. That type of thing. I think it’s something you develop, you work on. I think it’s important. He asked questions a lot about when I was with [Pro Football Hall of Fame QB] Drew [Brees]. You get to a point, and it happened last week where there are several times where I make a call and he kind of knows that… I already know what our first short-yardage or red-zone [play is]. When that begins to happen, I think that really helps him on the field knowing what to expect when it comes in. It takes a while, but I agree with what [former NFL QB] Tom [Brady] said.”
There are always outside speculators about what Nix and Payton’s relationship dynamic is like, but both are on the same page, possess the same competitive fire to win, and the team’s success has been a byproduct of it.
