Brett Hawke, the current head swimming coach with the Enhanced Games, is entered to compete in an upcoming Masters meet in California, leading to questions about his eligibility given his role with an organization that’s actively promoting taking performance-enhancing drugs.

Hawke, 51, is listed as being a relay swimmer for the Spartans Masters at the Aqua Knuckles SCM Swim Meet on Nov. 15 in La Canada Flintridge, Calif., which is sanctioned by Southern Pacific Masters Swimming and U.S. Masters Swimming (USMS).

A group of Masters swimmers have sent out a formal protest against Hawke competing to USMS and Southern Pacific Masters Swimming, claiming that despite Hawke holding an active USMS registration, his current role as head coach of the Enhanced Games “presents a profound and irreconcilable conflict of interest with the core tenets of USMS.”

USMS issued the following statement to SwimSwam on the matter:

U.S. Masters Swimming is aware that Brett Hawke has renewed his membership and entered a sanctioned USMS meet within the past 10 days.

We’re reviewing this matter in accordance with our established policies and procedures. USMS is dedicated to fair competition and integrity, and all USMS members are required to comply with applicable rules and regulations.

The swimmers protesting Hawke’s involvement pointed to a situation involving Lance Armstrong in 2013, when the disgraced cyclist was entered to compete in the Masters South Central Zone Swimming Championships.

After consulting with FINA and United States Aquatic Sports, USMS determined that although Armstrong was eligible for membership, he was not eligible to compete in sanctioned swimming competitions.

USMS said that the World Anti-Doping Agency had banned Armstrong from competition, and that since FINA accepts the World Anti-Doping Code, and USMS, as a member of United States Aquatic Sports, recognizes and respects adjudications under the Code.

While Masters swimmers are technically bound by anti-doping rules under the broader WADA Code, drug testing is not part of standard Masters-level events.

Hawke, though he doesn’t have a positive doping test to his name, should not be eligible to compete due to his public-facing position with the Enhanced Games, the group of swimmers said.

“If USMS upheld the integrity of clean sport by blocking a high-profile promoter of doping culture a decade ago, allowing an active architect of the modern pro-doping movement to swim on relays, potentially break records, and market his enterprise inside a WADA-aligned meet sets a dangerous and hypocritical precedent,” they said.

“We respectfully request that meet leadership and USMS review this entry against past actions like Lance Armstrong and stop such conduct which is obviously detrimental to the sport’s image and reputation, and take appropriate action to protect the integrity of the upcoming meet.”
