2026 HUNGARIAN SHORT COURSE CHAMPIONSHIPS
Wednesday, November 4th – Saturday, November 7th Prelims at 9am local (3am ET), Finals at 5pm local (11am ET) Csik Ferenc Swimming Pool, Kaposvár, Hungary SCM (25m) SwimSwam Preview Meet Central Day 1 Recap Entries/Live ResultsThe 2026 Hungarian Short Course Championships saw day two transpire from Kaposvár with a large domestic contingent set to compete at the Csik Ferenc Swimming Pool over the next several days.
As a reminder, the nation of Hungary is not sending an official contingent to this year’s Short Course World Championships, with only Olympic champions Hubert Kos and Kristof Milak being offered the opportunity to compete in Beijing next month.
That means roster slots are not on the line at this competition; rather, the racers will be vying for hardware, titles and bragging rights among their domestic rivals.
24-year-old Gabor Zombori doubled up on his 400m IM victory from night one with a gold in the men’s 400m free.
Zombori stopped the clock at a time of 3:42.90, another new lifetime best, to get to the wall first.
Mate Karpati snagged the silver in 3:43.44, with Nandor Nagy rounding out the podium in 3:45.57.
As for Zombori, his outing overtook his former PB of 3:43.24, notched at this competition five years ago. He remains Hungary’s 9th-fastest man in history in this event.
On his performance, Zombori told the Hungarian Swimming Federation, “I wouldn’t say something is starting, but something is returning. Then I don’t know what heights I’ll be able to return to, let’s hope for the best – I can’t promise that I’ll improve my personal best in long course, but who knows what else will happen until the Olympic Games.”
Ajna Kesely also earned another gold, adding the 400m freestyle victory to the 1500m free win she produced on day one.
Kesely punched a result of 4:04.94 for a healthy advantage over her competitors, with Laura Zsebok represented the next-closest swimmer in 4:06.72.
Lilla Szabo posted 4:07.24 to earn the bronze.
25-year-old Kesely earned bronze in this event at the 2022 European Long Course Championships before she upgraded to gold two years later in Belgrade. She also owns a bronze from the 2019 European Short Course Championships.
Panna Ugrai continued her successful campaign, reaping two additional golds to bring her total to an impressive four individual event wins thus far in the meet.
22-year-old Ugrai first took on the women’s 100m back, where she beat the pack in a time of 58.00 for a monster new career-swiftest result.
Entering this competition, Ugrai’s PB rested at the 58.67 set three years ago, so she managed to slice over half a second off that prior outing to check in as Hungary’s #3 performer of all time.
Also inserting herself onto that list was Fanni Viktoria Kokas, with the teenager clocking 58.48 for runner-up status. Her time established a new Hungarian Age Record for 17-year-olds, overtaking the 58.75 Lora Komoroczy put on the books in 2023. She is now the nation’s 4th-best performer all time.
Gerda Szilagyi bagged the bronze in 59.51.

Ugrai posted 24.77 for the narrow victory ahead of Uganda’s Gloria Muzito, who registered a new national record of 24.79 as she settled for silver.
Flora Molnar was the bronze medalist in 25.33.
Reflecting on her performances, Ugrai stated, “It was a lovely day… I’m happy, I set a personal best in the 100 backstroke, I also managed to win in the freestyle, I was close to my best there too – I was already starting to feel bad there, so it’s even more happiness that I won.”
Additional Notes
27-year-old Richard Marton tried the men’s 200m fly on for size, where he found success in a time of 1:52.76. Although that was well off his lifetime best of 1:50.83 from last year’s European Short Course Championshps, it was enough to hold off his peers here. Anton Kocsu settled for silver in 1:54.26, followed by David Antal, who nabbed bronze in 1:54.28. Marton is the reigning European Long Course Championships silver medalist in this event from the summer. After his win, Marton told the Hungarian Swimming Federation, “I had reservations about what I would be able to do now, I didn’t think I would have such a good time. I wanted to win, to be in front – it all came together, so I’m happy. Obviously I’m not in top shape, I haven’t had a peak preparation period so far, it was quite possible that the young guys would beat me, but I managed to hold my ground.” The women’s 200m fly saw Boroka Kertesz get the job done, hitting 2:08.03 as one of two swimmers to delve under the 2:10 threshold. Joining her under the barrier was Fanni Fabian, who logged 2:08.21, with Laura Ilyes producing 2:10.10 as the 3rd-place finisher. Adam Jaszo proved too quick to catch in the men’s 100m back, with the 24-year-old getting to the wall first in 51.63. Benedek Kovacs was just .20 behind in 51.83 as the runner-up, with Zsombor Racz also landing on the podium in 52.15 as the bronze medalist. After missing gold in the 50m back on day one, Jaszo said, “Yesterday was pretty unlucky, especially the fifty backstroke. Luckily, I managed to improve on the hundred, although I’m not in top form – I’m not saying we’re working ultra hard, but we haven’t made it easy either, now we’re keeping it up, and then we’ll start the long course season from there.” Szebasztian Szabo produced a time of 21.57 to win the men’s 50m freestyle, as a pair of athletes touched simultaneously for the silver. Nandor Nemeth and Heiko Gigler shared runner-up honors, with both men posting 21.71 in the event. Szabo said post-race, “The result was good, the swimming too. I swam with a slightly different technique, because now we clearly started to hit the 100m speed, which is more important because of the relay. I see this as a test race, coming from work, that’s why I didn’t shave it off any time.”Read the full story on SwimSwam: Panna Ugrai Continues Tear At 2026 Hungarian Short Course Championships
