The Orioles must believe that Grayson Rodriguez’s elbow is completely cooked, because this trade makes ZERO sense otherwise.

— MLB (@MLB) November 19, 2025OK, so you have the Orioles sending a former tip-top pitching prospect in Grayson Rodriguez, coming off a better-than-league-average season, who is just 26 and four years away from free agency, for a 32-year-old decent corner outfielder in Taylor Ward, who is a free agent after 2026.
I had heard the corner outfield market was tight this year, but HOLY woof.
So, like I said at the top, this absolutely, positively has to be a case of the Orioles worrying that Rodriguez is never actually worth anything in the big leagues again. It’s the only explanation. He has had arm issues in the past, serious enough to cause performance concerns and reasonable questions about whether he’d ever reach the heights of his prospect promise, but how are they bailing like this? He had a debridement procedure in August, but is expected to be ready for the start of the season. And if he’s OK, you’re talking about four years of an average or better – with upside! – starting pitcher. FOR A SINGLE YEAR OF A GOOD-NOT-GREAT CORNER OUTFIELDER!
The deal isn’t even just about the Orioles being cheap, as Ward, who hit .228/.317/.475/117 wRC+ in 2025, is projected to make almost $14 million in his final year of arbitration, per MLBTR.
I cannot make heads or tails of this, again, barring something we don’t know about Rodriguez’s physical projection.
In the meantime, I guess if you have a corner outfielder to trade, now is the time to do it. This makes me wonder about what the price tag would be on fellow Angels outfielder Jo Adell, if the Angels also looked to move him. He probably has a lot more 2026 risk than Ward, but he’s under control for two more years and finally put together a solid offensive season in 2025. The Cubs have been rumored to be an Adell suitor – presumably as a lefty-mashing, part-time OF, part-time DH to mix in with Ian Happ and Seiya Suzuki – but who knows if the price is even remotely reasonable. Or, again, whether moving Ward means the Angels are now done in that area.
