Former Evans Mayor Brian Rudy is running for the Ward 4 seat on the Greeley City Council, seeking to bring his extensive experience of 10 years in local government to the city.
If elected, Rudy’s first and biggest priority will be to improve public safety and shift the city’s focus to downtown, helping build it up into an even greater area for families. He also wants to focus on improving the city’s roads and improving the drainage system, as he knows firsthand how severe the flooding can be in east Greeley during a rainstorm.
“I think government should be there to put the pieces into place for people to be able to succeed, which is roads, safety and public services,” Rudy said. “We’ve got to focus a lot on downtown as well. I know we are, but downtown can be such a great area for our city and its citizens.”
Rudy expressed his concerns with the Catalyst project, an entertainment development in west Greeley, stating that its funding mechanisms make him nervous. Rudy agrees with the Greeley Deserves Better initiative to put a repeal of a critical funding mechanism for the Catalyst project on the ballot this November.
“I think the project is great. I have two twin boys that I think would have a ball out there all the time, but it needs to be done in a sensible and smart way and not risk too much for the city,” Rudy said. “You can’t just ignore 5,000 citizens that are saying, ‘Hey, now, let’s back up and take a step back and look at this.’ ”
Serving as both a councilman and mayor in Evans for a combined 10 years before reaching term limits in 2022, Rudy said he was eager to return to local government. Despite the mayoral seat being up for election this November, Rudy said he wanted to get to know Greeley as a councilman before considering a run for mayor.
“Evans is smaller than Greeley, but it’s the same issues, just on a different scale,” Rudy said. “I think I did a great job over at the city of Evans, and I’m looking forward to hopefully, if the people will trust me to make the right decisions with their input, move Greeley forward.”
Ward 4 encompasses the area northwest of the intersection of 35th Avenue and 10th Street, extending to the western border of Greeley. Hall previously held the seat before deciding to run for mayor, and the race was largely uncontested until three last-minute candidates entered the race, including Rudy himself, who only joined less than a week before the deadline.
At this time, Rudy is running against Amberleigh Gregor, Bill Gillard and Kendall Boots for the council seat. There are four other city council seats up for grabs this year, including mayor, at-large, Ward 2 and Ward 3.
