North Carolina high school state qualifier MacCade Ward has announced his verbal commitment to stay in-state and swim at Queens University of Charlotte beginning in the fall of 2027, marking the first publicized commitment in the university’s class of 2031. He publicized the news on SwimCloud, writing:
I am beyond excited to announce my verbal commitment to continue my athletic and academic career at Queens University. First I want to thank God for the opportunities he has presented me and my family. I also want to thank coach Jamie, coach Rachel, and Coach Madison for the guidance through this journey and would like to thank Coach Elliot and Jeff for giving me the opportunity to join the team. Lastly I want to give a BIG thank you to my mom for always supporting me from the start. GO ROYALS!
A rising senior at Enloe High School in Raleigh, Ward has been a member of his school’s varsity swimming team since his freshman year. He also trains year-round with YMCA of the Triangle Area Swim Team, where he primarily specializes in the sprint freestyle events.
Ward is coming off a 2025-26 season that saw him drop over two and a half seconds in the 200 free, over a second and a half in the 100 free, and a few tenths in the 50 free. He set all of his current PBs, 22.58, 49.39, and 1:48.67, at the NC YOTA 32nd Annual YOTA/Arena Capital meet in December.
Ward qualified and competed at the North Carolina High School Athletic Association’s (NCHSAA) 8A State Championships for the first time this past February, where he helped Enloe to eighth in the 200 free relay (22.81 leadoff) in addition to placing 24th in the 200 free (1:50.47) and 26th in the 100 free (50.08).

To score at the meet, times of 20.42, 45.24, and 1:39.18 were needed in the 50, 100, and 200 free, putting his current PBs outside the cutoffs, though he still has two full seasons of training ahead before he even lines up at his first conference meet.
