In the wake behind Gretchen Walsh’s World Record in the women’s 50 meter free on Friday in Charlottesville was three-time U.S. Olympian Abbey Weitzeil.
While Weitzeil (23.72) was almost a full-second behind Walsh (22.75), she was swimming her own race on Friday. That was her first swim since the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, and more significantly it was her first race since giving birth in February to her first child.
And it was just three tenths away from a lifetime best for the 29-year-old. On the race, Weitzeil shared, “I’m very proud of myself, 8 months postpartum. I was just coming out here to have a good time, get a race under my belt.” She also said that she will be attending US Open in Austin in December, which will be her “goal meet” of the year, with the ultimate goal of vying for a spot on the LA2028 Olympic team in two years.
Since retiring in 2024, Weitzeil relocated to Charlotte, where she is currently living and now training again. The 3x Olympian is swimming singles and lifting with Queen’s University. Juggling a lot (motherhood, full-time work, and training) compared to being a professional athlete, Weitzeil reflected, “My life is totally different than it used to be, clearly, and it’s great. It’s working out.”
Weitzeil for a long time was the fastest female 50-yard freestyler on earth, until the current crop of Virginia women roared through and rewrote what was possible.
She swam a lot of 50 frees in short course meters in her career for an American – she has at least 29 such official swims on her register. Her lifetime best is a 23.44 from the 2021 ISL season.
Weitzeil is one of two swim stars currently working their way back to the sport as mothers. The other is Swedish swimmer Sarah Sjostrom, a World Record breaker and Olympic gold medalist, who won the European Championship in the 50 fly and a silver in the 50 free over the summer a year after giving birth to her first child.
