Derek Hernandez-Ojeda from Cedar Park, Texas, has made a verbal commitment to swim and study at Arizona State University beginning in the fall of 2028. He wrote on social media:
“I am extremely excited to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and athletic career at Arizona State University! I want to thank everyone who has believed in me and supported me so much, such as my coaches and parents. Thank you Coach Herbie and the rest of the ASU staff for this opportunity. Excited for whats to come! Forks up!! ”

He won the boys’ 15-16 100 fly with a PB of 56.90 and was runner-up in the 200 IM (2:11.59, also a PB). A month later, at Mexican Junior Nationals, he won the boys’ 15-16 100 back, 200 back, 200 fly, 200 IM, and 400 IM, and was runner-up in the 50 back and 100 fly. He improved his best times in the 50 back (27.56), 100 back (57.69), and 200 IM (2:10.69).
At U.S. National Championships, he competed in the 200 back, 100 fly, and 200 fly, earning a PB in the 200 fly (2:02.61). At Summer Juniors a week later, he lowered his times in the 200 back (2:02.36) and 400 IM (4:33.73) while finaling in the 200 back (8th) and 200 fly (22nd).
