Injury Update: Julian Strawther out six weeks with left knee sprain

Denver Nuggets wing Julian Strawther will miss six weeks with a left knee sprain, the Denver Nuggets announced on Friday evening.

After playing well through the first three games of the preseason, Strawther, fell awkwardly after contact in the third quarter of Wednesday’s game against the Los Angeles Clippers, grabbing his left knee and in visible pain. There was concern that the injury could be a major one, but Strawther avoided a serious knee injury.

Strawther is entering his fourth season with the Nuggets and the last season of his rookie contract. The Nuggets aren’t expected to negotiate an extension with him during the rookie extension window, meaning this season is an extremely important one for Strawther in determining his future market.

Last season, Strawther was in and out of the rotation, playing 57 games and averaging just 15.4 minutes per game. With Tim Hardaway Jr. gone, the Nuggets’ bench spacing role is up for grabs, and Strawther was playing particularly well in that role next to Tyus Jones, DeMar DeRozan, Marvin Bagley III, and others.

A six-week timetable places a Strawther return at around December 1st, which is in the middle of a road trip. Game 20 of the season against the Philadelphia 76ers is on December 2nd. That’s right before the NBA Cup break in early December, and Denver’s next scheduled game is December 12th against the Utah Jazz, though Denver will certainly play two games in between.

The long and short of it is this: Denver should be thrilled they aren’t losing Strawther for the full season; however, additional pressure will now be placed on the bench due to Strawther’s scoring and spacing absence.

Head coach David Adelman previously stated that he would like to play full bench lineups to start the season. That puts a lot of pressure on Alpha Diallo to step up in Strawther’s absence and add a defensive component to Denver’s bench group.
