For the “you’re doing a very good job” Donald from the president of a supposedly apolitical institution. For the “most people got visas” and that wild Instagram post. For the Fifa office in Trump Tower.

Every day Infantino remains is a stain on Fifa itself, because the sheer force of his self-promotion has blurred the lines between the organisation and one individual. Infantino is Fifa – Fifa is Infantino. If that sounds unfair to those who work there and do genuine good, ask any person on any street for a review. He is bringing you down.

If not, every slogan looks empty. Every promise you make is an empty vessel. We will see your organisation’s lips moving and all we will hear are reasons to be cynical. This is Fifa’s only chance to show that it is truly separate from its president. Fail to do so and all trust will disintegrate. To those within Fifa who work tirelessly and well: you must manoeuvre.

This desperate attempted coup has raised questions of Fifa’s version of democracy too. One nation with one vote makes sense in theory, but less so when swathes of individual confederations can be led through emotional blackmail. It also goes without saying: the presence of pure democracy dissipates when those wielding it (in this case the heads of national football associations) are themselves in positions of comparative power and wealth.

We also need to send a message to those in charge of sporting governance: you are not getting it and we are sick of it. You are supposed to work for us and the sport itself, not for yourselves. How dare you lose sight of that ethic.

You are paid incredibly well and we stomach it, because the responsibility demands excellence. But your job is not an echo chamber of self-serving, private jets and rubbing shoulders with world leaders. You are not paid to position yourself for greater wealth and celebrity. You exist in a position of honour and privilege that should provoke humility not arrogance. You are not kings or queens, but servants.

This may make us sound like dreamers. Have you seen the state of the world? Decency in governance has become an anachronism. But we cannot admit defeat otherwise we can never win again. We have seen over the last week what happens when nations come together and we should be proud of it.

Now that energy must persevere. The best and the easiest time to remove Infantino was yesterday. The longer he clings to power, the firmer his grip. Wales and England are the first nations to withdraw all support – others must follow en masse. Mealy mouthing ends in nothing.

Infantino will retain swathes of electoral support. Even those who have railed against the World Cup sell-off may be loathed to leave his side. Fifa’s president still has support amongst Asia, Africa and South American nations. That only increases the onus on everyone else to shout their mutiny from the rooftops.

So recall your letters of support (and have a long think about why you first submitted them at all). Assemble your votes of no confidence. Maintain your threats of boycott not just if the plans to sell off international football are abandoned, but if their grim architect stays too. This is a shot at a different future. And it might be our only one.
