Initially recorded in October 1963, “I Want to Hold Your Hand” quickly became one of the Beatles’ biggest successes up to that point in time.
A fast-paced rock/pop song, the song is also notable for becoming the band’s first American number-one hit, climbing to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart by February 1, 1964, remaining there for seven weeks before being topped by the Beatles’ previous single, “She Loves You.”
At the time, “I Want to Hold Your Hand” became the Beatles’ best-selling single across the globe, selling more than 12 million copies worldwide. Decades later, Billboard included the song as the 48th biggest hit of all time on the magazine’s Hot 100, helping secure the Beatles’ transition from the United Kingdom to international rock icons by the mid 1960s.
