Cubs vs Angels — The Cubs dropped their first series of the year to a not-good Nationals team at Wrigley Field. And that stinks. Worse, some of our early concerns over Matthew Boyd’s effectiveness and Shota Imanaga’s ability to keep it in the park weren’t exactly alleviated. But – and I can’t believe I even have to say this – my concern level is zero. Nada. Zilch. Sucks that they lost the series, and it means nothing other than the Cubs should have won at least one more game. It’s not even April, guys. I think they can bounce back.

And what better way than another home series against a weak opponent? Starting tonight, the Cubs are hosting the Los Angeles Angels for three games at Wrigley Field, followed by an off-day on Thursday.

I’ll be especially nervous to see how Jameson Taillon’s first start goes given how bad his spring was, and you’d obviously like Matthew Boyd to bounce back too. But the headline of this series, at least on the pitching side, is Edward Cabrera.

The Cubs big offseason addition is making his Cubs debut tonight at Wrigley Field, with the wind howling out once again (wind has been a big factor in these games so far). And while he has three full years to make this trade feel “worth” it, I’m sure it’s not lost on anyone how great of a start Owen Caissie has had in Miami, including last night’s pinch-hit, walk-off home run.

Of course, even if the Cubs pitching isn’t great this week, their offense should be on track for some big games. Tonight’s starter, Ryan Johnson, is a 23-year-old former second-round pick who has made just 14 relief appearances in his big league career (and only 12 starts at the High-A level) before tonight. Maybe he’s got a bright future ahead of him, but if that’s not a guy a group of World Series-contending hopefuls can beat up on with great hitting conditions, I don’t know who will be. At least, on paper.

After Johnson, the Cubs will get Jose Soriano. He’s got a great deal more experience than Johnson, but pitched to a 4.26 ERA last year (stronger peripherals, but still). Then again, in his first game of the year, Soriano dominated the Astros: 6.0 IP, 2H, 0ER, 4BB, 7K. So, we’ll see, I guess.

And finally, on Wednesday (afternoon game), the Cubs will get Yusei Kikuchi, who is now approaching 35 years old and has a career 4.46 ERA in the Majors.

Kikuchi will be the first southpaw the Cubs face this year, which means there should be some changes to their lineup, especially given his significant lefty/righty splits:

    vsLHH: .222/.282/.369 (.284 wOBA)vsRHH: .268/.335/.464 (.343 wOBA)

The only issue here is that Seiya Suzuki is still out, so the Cubs won’t really be able to do their desired “vs lefties” lineup. Still, you can probably expect Nico Hoerner leading off and Matt Shaw starting somewhere. Could be as simple as right field, or he could push someone else to DH and he takes their spot. Personally, I wouldn’t mind Bregman acting as the DH, so that he gets as much rest as possible this year, with Shaw taking over 3B. That would push Ballesteros out and then you just need a right fielder.

Maybe Dylan Carlson gets the start. He’s been much better against lefties than righties in his career, anyway.

One thing of note for the Angels: Mike Trout has gotten off to a very vintage Mike Trout start this season, with six hits (including two homers) and a stolen base through his first four games. He’s also already drawn SEVEN walks. So, yeah, watch out for him.
