Two-time Olympic medalist and former world champion Gabriele Detti has retired from competitive swimming at the age of 31.
The Italian distance freestyler contested the final race of his career on Tuesday at the 2026 Italian Age Group Championships in Rome, finishing fourth in the senior final of the men’s 400 freestyle.
Giovanni Caserta won the race in 3:50.36, followed by Pietro Paolo Sarpe in 3:52.91 and Filippo Monepi in 3:53.16. Detti touched in 3:54.76, just over a second outside the podium.
Detti was third at the 200-meter turn in 1:56.29 before moving into fourth over the second half of the race. After he climbed out of the pool, athletes, coaches and spectators at the Stadio del Nuoto gave him a lengthy ovation.
The location and the event provided a fitting setting for the final appearance of an athlete who spent more than a decade competing at the highest level of Italian and international swimming.
Detti’s international breakthrough came during the Olympic cycle leading into Rio 2016. At the European Championships in London that year, he won the 400 freestyle and earned silver medals in both the 800 and 1500 freestyle.
He arrived at the Rio Olympics as one of Italy’s leading medal contenders in the distance events and left Brazil with two bronze medals.
In the 400 freestyle, Detti finished in 3:43.49 behind Australian Mack Horton, who won the Olympic title in 3:41.55, and China’s Sun Yang, who took silver in 3:41.68.
One week later, Detti returned to the podium in the 1500 freestyle. His Italian teammate and longtime training partner Gregorio Paltrinieri won gold in 14:34.57, while American Connor Jaeger placed second in an American record of 14:39.48. Detti claimed bronze in 14:40.86, giving Italy two swimmers on the Olympic podium in the event.
Detti reached the peak of his career the following year at the 2017 World Championships in Budapest. He won the 800 freestyle world title in 7:40.77, lowering the European record he had set earlier that season.
He also earned bronze in the 400 freestyle in Budapest, finishing in 3:43.93 behind Sun and Horton.
Detti returned to the World Championship podium in 2019 in Gwangju, where he placed third in the 400 freestyle in 3:43.23. That performance remains the Italian national record seven years later.
He also owns the Italian short course record in the 400 freestyle at 3:36.63, set in 2019.
Detti developed at the Italian federation’s national training center in Ostia (ITA) under Stefano Morini, alongside Paltrinieri. The two became central figures in a period of sustained international success for Italian distance swimming, although their careers eventually followed different directions.
While Paltrinieri expanded his program to include open water, Detti remained primarily focused on the pool and the 400 and 800 freestyle. His racing was characterized by an efficient stroke and the ability to maintain speed through the closing stages.
Injuries affected the later part of Detti’s career and interrupted the continuity he had established during his best seasons. He missed the 2018 European Championships because of a shoulder injury and later struggled to return consistently to the times that had placed him among the world’s leading distance swimmers.
Detti continued to compete at the national level and also explored open water during the final phase of his career. Earlier this year, he competed on the World Aquatics Open Water Swimming World Cup circuit.
His final pool race brought him back to the 400 freestyle, the event in which he won his first Olympic medal and still holds Italy’s national record.
Detti retires shortly before his 32nd birthday with two Olympic bronze medals, one individual world title, three individual World Championship medals and national records in the 400 freestyle in both long course and short course meters.
