Pleasanton Weekly, the hometown newspaper of rising swimming superstar Luka Mijatovic, may have accidentally confirmed the top-ranked recruit’s plans to attend the University of Texas early.
In an Instagram post on Monday after the conclusion of the US National Championships, Pleasanton Weekly initially posted on Instagram that Mijatovic would start at Texas in January 2027 after graduating early from Foothills High School.

Mijatovic, who will graduate in December from Foothill and head to the University of Texas, won the men’s 400 freestyle on Friday.

The news would not come as a surprise as the national rumor mill has anticipated this move for months.
Mijatovic made his senior level breakthrough at the 2025 World Championships at only 16 years old. There he finished 36th in the 400 free as one of a number of Americans who were battling severe gastrointestinal illness at the meet.
While he missed the Pan Pac roster for 2026, he will represent the U.S. at the Junior Pan Pacific Championships later this summer.
The best young American men’s distance swimming prospect in decades, Mijatovic holds 10 National Age Group Records in long course and 7 in short course. That includes already breaking the 17-18 record in the 400 meter free at US Nationals last week in spite of only being 17.
Mijatovic has range from 200 through 1500, and even flexing some potential in the 100 at Nationals last week, but really seems to be honing in on the 200-through-800 meter races.
The Texas men are the two-time defending NCAA Division I Swimming & Diving Champions and their recent success in recruiting makes them the favorites for the foreseeable future, on paper.
Mijatovic was the California High School State Champion in the 200 and 500 yard freestyles as a sophomore, and also won the 500 free as a freshman, but skipped the high school season during his junior year. California’s high school swimming & diving season is in the spring.
