Paige Kowal from Geneva, Illinois, has announced her intention to swim and study at the University of Alabama beginning in 2028-29. She wrote on social media:
“I’m so excited to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and athletic career at the University of Alabama! I’m so grateful for the support of my family, teammates and Bullets coaches who helped me get here. A special thanks to Coach Margo and Coach Rich for giving me this amazing opportunity. ROLL TIDE!! ”
Kowal is a junior at Rosary High School. She swims year-round with Academy Bullets Swim Club and specializes mainly in freestyle and IM. We named her to the “Best of the Rest” section on our Way Too Early list of top girls’ recruits in the high school class of 2028.
At the Illinois High School State Championships last fall, she won the 200 free (1:47.68) and was runner-up in the 500 free (4:54.50), earning PBs in both events (1:47.14/4:52.27) in prelims. She anchored the winning 200 free relay in 22.64. A year earlier, she had finished 3rd in the 200 IM (2:01.96) and 4th in the 500 free (4:56.36), having clocked PBs of 2:01.91 and 4:55.15 in prelims. She also contributed a 22.84 split to the winning 200 free relay.
Kowal had a breakout meet at 2026 NCSA Spring Championships. She finaled in the 100 free (4th), 200 free (2nd), 500 free (13th), 200 IM (11th), and 400 IM (6th), and took home PBs in the 100 free (49.49), 200 free (1:46.80), and 400 IM (4:17.13).
Similarly, at the NCSA Summer Championships, Kowal established lifetime bests in the LCM 50 free (26.48), 100 free (57.19), 200 free (2:03.30), 400 free (4:19.95), 100 fly (1:02.20), 200 IM (2:17.05), and 400 IM (4:54.15). She also anchored the ACAD 200 medley relay in 25.02 and the 400 free relay in 56.65.
Kowal will join a sprint group that featured two sub-22s (Cadence Vincent, currently a senior; and Tessa Giele, graduated) and three more sub-23s (Charlotte Rosendale, graduated; Jada Scott, now a senior; and Sarah Parker, now a sophomore). Vincent, Gaby Van Brunt (now a senior), Giele, Rosendale, and Scott were also under 40 seconds in the 100 free, while Vincent and Ella Jones were also faster than 1:47 in the 200 free.
It took 22.59/ 49.08/ 1:46.80/ 4:48.59 in the freestyle events and 2:00.73/ 4:17.08 in the IMs to score at the 2026 SEC Championships.
