Tears rolled down Scottish record holder Archie Goodburn‘s face as he implored new British Prime Minister Andy Burnham for cancer investment.
Goodburn appeared on the BBC Breakfast morning show yesterday. The 25-year-old breaststroker living with inoperable brain cancer discussed what he sees as inadequate leadership and research in his country. The clip provoked a response from Burnham, who thanked Goodburn for his advocacy and offered to meet him.

Goodburn, who was diagnosed with the illness in 2024, advocated for the establishment of a national brain cancer lead. In an Instagram comment on BBC, he said that beyond funding, he’s asking for “dedicated brain cancer leadership that supports the translation of preclinical findings and the overhaul of policies that inhibit trial feasibility in the UK”. In the interview, the athlete says that Britiain lags behind other countries as far as clinical trials that could save lives. These pleas mirror those he made in an emotional interview at the 2026 Commonwealth Games. There, he gave a teary-eyed plea in cap and goggles for national brain cancer leadership while saying that brain cancer is the #1 cause of death for those under 40.
Goodburn has had a strong year in the pool while battling cancer and juggling advocacy. He placed 7th in the 50 breast in his first Commonwealth Games final last month. Prior to that, he hit several best times and even broke the Scottish national record in the 50 breast at the BUCS Championships in February.

Andy Burnham was chosen as the new leader of the United Kingdom’s ruling Labour party in July, thus making him the new Prime Minister as well. When Parliament returns from a recess in September, Burnham’s government will have the opportunity to address a variety of concerns for the first time, including Goodburns’.
