Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Sevanah Oravets of Red Bank YMCA, a multi-time YMCA Nationals finalist, has sent her verbal commitment to James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia. Oravets is an NJ native and a senior at Southern Regional High School.

At the short course edition of YMCA Nationals this spring, Oravets showed off her versatility by qualifying for the championship final in both the 200 breaststroke and 500 freestyle. She placed 7th in each, posting personal bests of 2:16.63 and 4:58.55, respectively. Oravets also swam to 10th in the 100 breast (1:03.46) and 19th in the 200 free (1:53.03), both of which were PBs. In addition to her individual success, she was a crucial part of Red Bank YMCA’s top 10 finish: she split 23.85 on the 200 free relay, 1:51.56 on the 800 free relay, 28.86 on the 200 medley relay, and 1:02.77 on the 400 medley relay, swimming breaststroke on both medleys.

A similar performance followed at the long course YMCA Nationals in July, where Oravets again played a key role for Red Bank YMCA. She placed 8th in the 100 breast (1:14.22), 9th in the 200 breast (2:42.68), and 12th in the 50 breast (34.30). On relays, she delivered splits of 27.45 in the 200 free, 59.88 on the 400 free, and 2:11.75 leading off the 800 free relay. She also swam a 1:13.32 breaststroke leg in the 400 medley relay to help Red Bank place 3rd.

James Madison University is a D1 Mid-Major in the American Athletic Conference. The Dukes recently moved from the Sun Belt Conference, where they were the two time defending champions.

Oravets would have qualified for the consolation final at AACs last year in both breaststrokes and the 500 free, though the conference is bound to get more competitive this year—along with the addition of JMU, Marshall and Liberty also joined the conference.

Last season, JMU’s breaststroke group was led by junior Riley Bridgman, who owns personal bests of 1:01 in the 100 breast and 2:12 in the 200. Oravets’ top times would have ranked second behind Bridgman on the roster. Although the two will overlap for just one season, Oravets will still have strong training partners after Bridgman’s graduation. Current freshman Claire Francis swims a 1:03.3 in the 100 breast and also specializes in sprint free, giving JMU a strong breaststroke group as the program enters its second year in the AAC.

She will join Ellie Mierenfeld (back), Sarah Hurley (fly/IM), Ava Simpson (sprint free), and Addison Buckman (fly/back) in JMU’s class of 2030 next fall.
