The Chicago Bears will be without Cole Kmet for the rest of the season.
Kmet suffered a season-ending knee injury in the Bears’ win against the New England Patriots on Thursday Night Football. He was placed on injured reserve on Friday afternoon. And while there will be a time and place to discuss Chicago’s contingency plans and possible external options who could be acquired via trade, I wanted to take a moment to share what Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson and quarterback Caleb Williams had to say about a player who clearly means so much to them.
We can start with the head coach:

— Chicago Bears (@ChicagoBears) October 23, 2026Words from the Bears head coach (as transcribed by Bears reporter Nicholas Moreano):
“He’s one of my favorites for a number of reasons, but, you know, I still remember him at the combine coming out, and how much I love him and that slight interaction that we had there and to be able to be in the same building with him for the last year and a half, I’ve got so much respect for the player that he is, but also for the person, the leader.
He’s everything that we want to be about here. He’s one of the glue guys. He’s a guy that I can count on whether it’s a messaging standpoint or to get the pulse of the team. He’s going to be sorely missed. I think, he’s Chicago, you know. He’s been here his whole life and he’s a big part of our heartbeat. It stinks. It does. I hate it for him.”
I didn’t realize how deep it went with Johnson and Cole Kmet. Seeing this hit my timeline this afternoon really drove it home:

— No Context Chicago Bears ? (@BearsNoContext) October 23, 2026Caleb Williams Reflects on Losing Tight End Cole Kmet
104.3 The Score’s Chris Emma shared this quote from Bears quarterback Caleb Williams after the team’s win on Thursday Night Football:
“I don’t have the words to describe what Cole is to me, what Cole is to this team, to this organization. He’s the longest tenured Bear, I believe. He’s been through it. So, it’s challenging, it’s tough. I’ll be right there with him through every step of whatever the injury is. Cole has been there for me every step of the way, through the first year, the second year and now through this year. So, I can only do the same for him.”

Williams isn’t kidding. Cole Kmet has played for two general managers, three head coaches and an interim head coach, six offensive play callers, and eight quarterbacks. All the while, just one winning season, two playoff trips, and four years with 10+ losses. Kmet shared his Super Bowl aspirations before the season kicked off. Knowing what he had been through, I felt good about him settling into the wily vet role on a contending team. It stinks that his 2026 season is ending with a knee injury.

Mandatory Credit: Patrick Gorski-Imagn ImagesThis quote from the head coach puts the Cole Kmet situation in a different light, reminding us that the team will move on (while also relaying that they’ll be playing for their fallen teammate):
“I hate it for his teammates as well, and yet the train keeps rolling on. Someone else needs to step up. Fortunately, you know, we talked about this last week. Just our practice squad, the way they have been developing, the way they have been working, I think we have some good options here on this roster, so, yeah, we’re going to miss him.”
I’m glad the Bears have a mini-bye until their next game, which is on Nov. 2, a Monday Night Football showdown against the defending Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks on the road. Not only is this an important time to rest and recover, but it also buys the coaching staff time to rally the players after losing a popular (and important) teammate like Cole Kmet due to injury. Again, we’ll dig into the tight end depth chart soon enough, but we’ll cross that bridge when we get to it.
