Happy Victory Friday! QB1 Has Faith, Luther Balls Out, Fun With Thuney’s Handoff, and Other Bears Bullets

The only thing better than starting the work week with a Bears Victory Monday is ending it with a Victory Friday.

There are a lot of things I like about Caleb Williams. But one thing I love about him is that he doesn’t quit on guys. It has been a constant throughout this season. Colston Loveland or Rome Odunze drops a ball? No biggie. QB1 is finding you on the next play or the next drive. Commit a penalty? Williams shakes it off and finds a way to get you feeling good about yourself with a target. He isn’t afraid to go back to people. I’m not sure if it says more about him as a leader or more about his willingness to trust his teammates. But I can say (with confidence) that I’ve never seen a Bears quarterback show that much faith in his teammates. Williams is truly built different.

    Ahem! As I was saying:

Even after a drop, Williams goes right back to Loveland for a crucial pickup on 4th down. NEvsCHI on Prime Video Stream on @NFLPlus t.co/0vaATuYHQp

    — NFL (@NFL) October 23, 2026 Going from Tyson Bagent and Case Keenum to Caleb Williams is like going from a Dollar Tree water pistol to The Series 3 De-Atomizer from Men In Black. Fun with small samples: This is QB1’s 17-game pace based on his first two games after the hamstring injury: 442/586 (75.$%), 5,210 pass yards, 25 TD, 0 INT, 116.4 passer rating. All Caleb has to do to become the first 4,000-yard passer in Bears history is average 298 passing yards in the final 10 games of the season. He is averaging 306.5 passing yards per game since returning from the injury. This is soooo doable. I want to circle back to that no-quit attitude, because it feels (anecdotally) that it is something that Williams has gotten from Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson. The way that Johnson is able to turn the page and keep it moving is unlike anything I’ve seen from a Bears coach. The debacle on that end-of-the-half Patriots touchdown could have been a turning point that caused Chicago to spiral in the second half. Instead, Johnson told Prime Video’s Kaylee Hartung after halftime that he and the team were putting it behind them — and then went out and called a near-flawless touchdown drive to start the second half. What a refreshing moment. A banger of a quote from the head coach: “I know we’ve got the right guys in this locker room that can handle anything that’s thrown their way. They have a lot of belief in each other too. I think that’s really a big part of it is they know that even when things get a little bit funky or haywire, that we can right the ship and get it going back the right direction really quickly.” (Tribune)

Here’s a fun fact about the Bears defense: The Bears’ defense has multiple sacks (including a pair vs. Pats QB Drake Maye on TNF) in each of their first seven games. It is the third-longest season-starting streak for this team in the last 50 seasons. (ESPN) Running back TreVeyon Henderson, who the New England Patriots took with the 38th overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, had 5 touches and 23 scrimmage yards while playing just 13 offensive snaps. Wide receiver Luther Burden III, who went one pick later to the Bears put up 4 catches, 130 yards, and a touchdown against the team that passed on drafting him. Considering how personally Burden took it when he fell to the Bears in that draft class, we should’ve seen last night coming. — The Ringer (@ringer) October 23, 2026 Remember that offsides penalty that gave the Bears a free first down late in the fourth-quarter? It turns out that was done on purpose. (Pro Football Talk) Hang this in The Art Institute of Chicago:

    — Jason Lieser (@JasonLieser) October 23, 2026 Joe Thuney getting a handoff against the team that drafted him and won Super Bowls with is a nice little wrinkle and a tip of the cap from this coaching staff. I laughed out loud when I woke up and saw this:

    — DaWindyCity Productions (@dwcprodz) October 23, 2026 Steve Greenberg (Sun-Times) writes that the Chicago sports scene appears to be having a moment. The Cubs and White Sox had playoff seasons. The Bulls and Blackhawks still have a lot of work to do, but both teams have promisimg young players to latch on to as their building efforts continue. And we’ve got the Bears at 5-2 after beating the defending AFC champs. We used to pray for times like this. The Bears are showing that they are a team that is built for primetime. After years of watching this team wilt under the bright lights, fans deserve this moment. (The Athletic)

Earlier in the week, I ran the numbers on how well Bears quarterback Caleb Williams performs when Tom Brady is in the booth. Perhaps I should spend some time during the mini-bye figuring out how well QB1 has played when Cubs All-Star center fielder Pete Crow-Armstrong is in attendance. Grading Caleb Wilson’s debut for the Chicago Bulls. A nice batch of BN Blackhawks Bullets from Tab Bamford on a Friday.
