Cairo Santos Gets a Game Ball From Ben Johnson After History-Making Field Goal

I’m sorry for doubting you, Cairo Santos.

But in my defense, I was not familiar with your game.

To set the scene, Bears quarterback Caleb Williams had just taken a sack that appeared to knock the offense out of field goal range. You can’t blame me for thinking that, right? After all, Santos had just missed from 53 yards out on the team’s previous offensive possession. Plus, it’s not as if Santos has a reputation as a big-legged kicker. And yet, when the moment came, it was Santos who wanted it in crunch time.

This is a heckuva pull from Bears reporter Zack Pearson:

Cairo Santos told us that the #Bears were talking about going to punt before his field goal attempt. But the injury allowed them some extra time. Ben then asked Richard Hightower who was standing next to Cairo “Does he want it?” Cairo responded: “I want it.” He delivered.

Cairo Santos On History-Making Field Goal: I Wanted It

In his “Good, Better, Best!” postgame breakdown, Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson called Santos’ 58-yard field goal a game-winner. While it technically won’t go down as one, it might as well be remembered as one. Because without that field goal, I’m not sure if we’re writing this post right now. And I’m certainly not sure that the Bears would have won that game. But he made it, the Bears won, and all is well that ends well at Soldier Field.

Also, Santos’ kick made some Bears history:

It tied Robbie Gould’s 58-yarder as the longest field goal in Bears franchise history. (h/t Jack Silverstein) That kick also goes down as tied for the longest field goal made by a Bears kicker at Soldier Field. (Josh Dubow, AP) That ball has to go in a trophy case for Santos, as it is a new career-long. One last look at this beauty:
