So much good surrounds the Chicago Bears right now. They’re 2-0 since the Packers debacle and Caleb Williams’ return to the lineup. Williams has been on another level, completing 52-of-69 passes (75.4%) for 613 passing yards and three touchdowns. I’ve got a few Williams nuggets for today, but in all of the goodness of the last five days, the news of Cole Kmet’s season-ending injury is a major bummer.

Kmet is about as Chicago Bears as it gets. A Chicago kid, who went from the Chicago burbs to Notre Dame and then to the Bears in the NFL Draft, has been here for some down years. Seeing him take a backseat to Colston Loveland in the offense and do so with class and still be a leader has been fun to watch, and it was nice to know that he was still going to be a big part of the current iteration of Bears football. He still will be, but he won’t be on the field for the rest of this season, and that stings. His letter to Bears fans in the Players’ Tribune in September was goosebump-inducing, and knowing how much Kmet cares about this franchise makes losing him for the rest of the season sting a little more. As Ben Johnson said today: “He is Chicago. He’s been here his whole life, and he’s a big part of our heartbeat. It stings. I hate it for him. I hate it for his teammates as well.” Oct 22, 2026; Chicago, Illinois, USA; Chicago Bears tight end Cole Kmet (85) is helped after an apparent injury during the second half against the New England Patriots at Soldier Field. Kmet was placed on injured reserve today, opening a roster spot for Montez Sweat, who has completed his two-game suspension for violating the league’s performance-enhancing substances policy. Sweat can return to practices and will be eligible to play next week when the Bears take on the Seattle Seahawks. With Kmet sidelined for the remainder of the season, rookie tight end Sam Roush will see an increased role moving forward, which probably doesn’t excite many. Roush has had some notable gaffes in the early weeks of his career with the Bears. Head coach Ben Johnson believes Roush is trending in the right direction despite those mistakes. “We’ve been very pleased with the improvements he’s made over the first few weeks … He has some rookie hiccups, like everbody does, but he doesn’t make the same mistake twice,” Johnson said on Friday. Johnson said he and his coaching staff are excited to get a closer look at a player they loved coming out of the draft and feel can contribute to the offense. “We’ll be able to see the player that we drafted. We had high hopes when we took him. I’m confident in what he’s going to be able to do for us [in the] back half of the season.” Aug 22, 2026; Cincinnati, Ohio, USA; Chicago Bears tight end Sam Roush (87) makes a catch during the second quarter against the Cincinnati Bengals at Paycor Stadium. Williams’ performance Thursday night marked the 35th straight regular-season game with 20-plus pass attempts and one or fewer interceptions, tying for the longest streak in NFL history with Aaron Rodgers (via Fanatics Sports & Casino on X). MORE: Caleb Williams Makes More History In Bears Win On Thursday Night Football

According to Dan Orlovsky on ESPN today, the Chicago Bears have run 505 offensive plays to just 351 for their opponents this season. That difference (+154) is the largest for any team through seven games in the Super Bowl era (since 1966). The Bears have run the most plays per game in the league (72.1) and allowed the fewest (50.1). Bears Report’s Zack Pearson noted that the Bears possessed the ball for 12:21 in the fourth quarter against the Patriots. That’s 82.3 percent of the game’s final quarter. Hard for a team to erase a deficit when they spend almost the entire quarter running a cardio program up and down the field on defense. According to Pearson, this is the third time this season that Chicago has possessed the ball for more than 12 minutes in the fourth quarter. You know the tides are turning on the Caleb discourse when Dan Orlovsky, noted Caleb critic, is absolutely losing his mind over how good Williams was on television …
