The Cubs Cleaned Up in The Fielding Bible Awards, Though There Was One Bizarre Element

As expected, the Chicago Cubs did very well in The Field Bible’s analytically-inclined defensive awards this year. Pete Crow-Armstrong was represented. Alex Bregman was represented. The whole team won an award, too!

But as you’ll see, there’s one weird thing that really stands out:

You see it, right? That’s Pete Crow-Armstrong winning the award as the best overall defender … but somehow NOT winning the award as the best center fielder?

That is, of course, absolute nonsense. There is an explanation in the way the voting works, so no hate for Sports Info Solutions … but I think we can nevertheless concede that it’s nonsense.

    The explanation from SIS:

Remarkably, Ceddanne Rafaela and Pete Crow-Armstrong finished tied in the center field balloting in points and also with eight first-place votes, seven second-place votes, and two third-place votes.

Since its inception in 2006, the intent of the Fielding Bible Awards has been to name one player as a winner at each position. To determine the winner we went to our last tiebreaker, most Defensive Runs Saved at the position. Rafaela led center fielders with 21 Runs Saved and won that tiebreaker and the Award.

Defensive Player of the Year is an open vote meaning that any player can win it. Crow-Armstrong earned three more points than Rafaela in that voting and thus won Defensive Player of the Year.

“We understand the split vote between PCA and Rafaela may seem counterintuitive at first, but ultimately it reflects how historically close the vote was,” said SIS VP of Analytics Joe Rosales, who leads the administration of the Awards. “Given the extremely tight margins, and given how great a season both players had, it seems only fitting that both players are getting honored with an award. Congratulations to both Pete and Ceddanne!”

I don’t know which part of that to react to most strongly. Rafaela is a stud, but it’s just hard for me to see PCA losing out on DRS (he did, though, 21 to 16; even though his OAA and FRV and DEF absolutely obliterated Rafaela’s numbers … sigh). Also, there were TWO voters who had PCA third in center field? Seriously? I’m guessing they were just voting straight DRS, which had Andy Pages between Rafaela and PCA. But again, all the other metrics were HEAVILY in PCA’s favor.

You know, because he was obviously the best defensive player in baseball. Which he won. But not the best defensive center fielder. Little bit of a blindspot there in the voting!

Anyway, great to see Alex Bregman get some love for his tremendous year at third, and the Cubs winning Defensive Team of the Year for the second year in a row (but insanely, they received only 11 of the 17 first place votes … what on earth were some of these people watching?!).

The Cubs also received some down-the-ballot votes for Dansby Swanson, Nico Hoerner (second base), Nico Hoerner (multi-position), Ian Happ, Seiya Suzuki, and Shota Imanaga – who actually finished just one vote behind Tanner Bibee for the win at pitcher.
