Unfortunately for the Chicago Bulls, they did not come out of their five games in seven days unscathed.
The injury report has filled up over the last few games, and Billy Donovan could be down several bodies for his Monday night matchup in New Orleans. Both Dalen Terry and Isaac Okoro remain out after missing the Bulls’ slim victory over the Washington Wizards on Saturday. Both players saw their days end early in the blowout loss to the Miami Heat. Terry is dealing with a calf strain, while Okoro has a lower back issue.
Kevin Huerter was also forced to leave the Bulls’ meeting with Miami, but he did so because of a questionable ejection. He went on to suit up for Saturday’s game against the Wizards and saw 19 minutes. According to the latest report, however, he is dealing with an illness and a left pelvis injury. Thus, the Bulls have listed as questionable a handful of hours before tip-off.
Joining Huerter with a 50/50 shot to play are Patrick Williams and Nikola Vucevic. Williams has a left wrist sprain that held him out against the Wizards. With physical young bigs like Derik Queen and Zion Williamson on the opposing side tonight, the Bulls are surely crossing their fingers that Williams can be ready to go off the bench.
As for Vucevic, monitoring his status will undoubtedly be the most important. He was downgraded to questionable with left knee soreness. The big man has yet to miss a game this season and was arguably the main reason why the Bulls went 3-2 last week. Not only did he splash the game-winner against Portland, but he dropped a team-high 28 points against the Wizards and snagged 9 offensive rebounds. The Bulls were absolutely killed on the offensive glass in the previous two games, making Vuevic’s rebounding effort a breath of fresh air.
While Vucevic’s defensive shortcomings remain an issue, there is no question that his veteran leadership has been key to keeping this team over .500. We also shouldn’t forget that Zach Collins remains out as he works his way back from a wrist injury. If Vucevic can not go, that leaves Jalen Smith as the lone center on the 15-man roster. The Bulls may have to lean on second-round selection Lachlan Olbrich, who has yet to appear in an NBA game this season.
The other option could be to play small with Williams at the five, but his status is also uncertain! The Pelicans are tied with the Bulls for averaging the highest percentage of field goal attempts at the rim, so figuring out the right strategy here is pivotal.
Nevertheless, the Bulls aren’t the only team with a long injury report. New Orleans remains without Jordan Poole and will be missing Jordan Hawkins due to personal reasons. Top-tier defender Herb Jones is also set to miss his second-straight game. The good news for New Orleans is that Zion Williamson is ready to go. He sat out the backend of the back-to-back with Atlanta as a precaution and will return well-rested for tonight.
