Greeley man shoots roommate 4 times after argument over living situation

A man was shot four times by his roommate in east Greeley over the weekend after an argument over their living situation.

Mitchel Salankey, 67, was arrested on suspicion of first-degree assault, illegal discharge of a firearm and felony possession of a controlled substance, according to an affidavit for his arrest.

On Saturday, Salankey reported he had shot another man at a house in the 400 block of E. 28th Street Road.

When Greeley police officers arrived, they found a man lying in the front yard with several gunshot wounds to his abdomen, hip and hand. Doctors later said the injuries were serious, but not life threatening, the affidavit states.

The man who was shot said he had been staying at the house for the past six months while helping care for Salankey, who has multiple sclerosis and other physical disabilities. He also told officers that Salankey regularly used meth and would behave erratically, according to the affidavit.

The man said he and Salankey were arguing about Salankey’s lack of appreciation for the help the man was providing when Salankey got angry and threatened to evict him. The man said he was trying to calm him down, but admitted to taunting Salankey just before he was shot, the affidavit states.

Salankey told police that the man came into his room already angry, the affidavit states. He told the man to leave several times, he said, and shot him after he started coming toward him.

He said he “freaked out” after realizing he shot the man, and called his brother-in-law, who told him to call police, according to the affidavit.

Police later searched the house on 28th St. Road and found 20.1 grams of meth, as well as used paraphernalia in Salankey’s room, the affidavit states.

Salankey was arrested Sunday morning and is being held in the Weld County Jail on $200,000 bond.

The Weld County District Attorney has until 3:30 p.m. Wednesday to officially file the charges.
