Mason Shirley of Rockwall, Texas has announced his verbal commitment to continue his academic and athletic career at Brigham Young University.

I want to thank my family, especially my mom and dad for their constant love and support to me along the way. Thank you to Coach John, Coach Kim, Coach Neil, and all the many coaches who have gotten me to where I am today. Finally, thank you Coach Hanselmann and Coach Tamber for the opportunity! LETS GO COUGS!!!!”
Shirley swims for Texas Ford Aquatics and Rockwall High School. He most recently competed at Futures in Austin at the end of July. He saw his highest finish come in the 1500 free as he swam a 16:30.37. He time trialed the 200 free and swam a lifetime best 1:55.09.
Back in March, he swam to numerous lifetime bests at Sectionals in Justin, Texas. There he swam to a 20th place finish in the 200 free with a lifetime best 1:41.99, dropping 2.01 seconds on the season. He also swam a lifetime best 46.48 100 free and a 52.97 100 back.
Shirley’s Best SCY Times Are:
200 free: 1:41.99 500 free: 4:32.74 1650 free: 15:49.89The BYU men finished 5th out of seven teams at the 2026 Big 12 Championships with 843 points. Tanner Nelson led the team with 84 individual points.
Based on his best times, Shirley would have been 6th on the roster this past season in the 500 free. It took a 4:27.57 to final in the event at the 2026 Big 12 Championships. Nelson finaled in the event at Big 12s, swimming a 4:17.04 for 4th. Nelson also was 4th in the 1650 free with a 15:05.30.
Shirley will arrive next fall as a member of the class of 2031 along with backstroker JT Goett who arrives from California.
