The Chicago Bulls dodged some more injury trouble for opening night.
A little over 24 hours before tip-off, Ayo Dosunmu and Patrick Williams were both still dealing with lingering injuries. Dosunmu hurt his thumb in the team’s fourth preseason game against the Denver Nuggets, which led head coach Billy Donovan to sit him out of the fifth and final preseason contest. As for Patrick Williams, he also sat out the last exhibition game due to hamstring tightness. While both were able to practice with the Bulls on Tuesday, their status for Wednesday remained up in the air … until now.
The Chicago Bulls’ latest official injury report does not feature Dosunmu or Williams. In other words, both have seemingly received the green light to be fully available this evening at the United Center. This surely feels like significant news for the Bulls, who are already expected to be down two essential rotation players.
Coby White and Zach Collins will both be stuck on the sideline for an extended time. White, who was initially expected to return for opening night, was ruled out for at least two weeks with a calf strain that has continued to hinder him since August. As for Collins, he suffered a wrist injury in preseason that required surgery. The big man will be stuck in street clothes for over a month.
Of course, White’s absence means the Bulls will begin the season without their projected leading scorer. White is coming off a career 2024-25 campaign where he put up borderline All-Star numbers over the second half of the year. Not having his explosive three-level scoring ability creates a significant void on the offensive end, and this void will only stand out that much more without Dosunmu. The guard can at least make up for some of White’s transition offense and downhill explosiveness.
As for Collins, he seemed to have locked in the primary backup role to Nikola Vucevic. The big man provided a much-needed level of physicality in the paint and on the glass. Especially against a team like the Detroit Pistons, who sat Top 5 in points in the paint and rebounding percentage last season, missing Collins could prove to be extremely problematic. Might this be an area where Patrick Williams can help? One of the strongest players on the team, he demonstrated a more consistent level of aggressiveness during the preseason. Continuing that tonight against a frontcourt that features players like Jalen Duren and Isaiah Stewart would be a huge help.
