Bulls Held “Advanced” Trade Talks About Ayo Dosunmu This Offseason, So What’s Next?

The Chicago Bulls are still roughly four weeks away from the start of the 2025-26 regular season, but the trade rumors aren’t waiting.

As if the team’s three consecutive Play-In losses haven’t been reason enough to consider significant roster changes, the front office now has a roster filled with expiring contracts. Whether they like it or not, the Bulls are set to enter the 2026 offseason with eight open roster spots. This means seven current players will hit the unrestricted free agent market and have the option to walk away from the Bulls with nothing in return.

While every team can live with some players turning their backs for a new squad, the goal is always to avoid this outcome with more prominent players. And that’s why the Bulls have a very difficult decision on their hands.

Both Coby White and Ayo Dosunmu are entering the final year of their very team-friendly contract. In fact, the deals are so team-friendly that the Bulls have not been able to reach an extension with either player, as the maximum offer they’re allowed to extend fails to meet market value. The good news is that the Bulls will have plenty of money to spend next summer. The bad news is that spending it on both White and Dosunmu might not make sense after re-signing Josh Giddey. Likewise, roughly ten teams are projected to join the Bulls in having meaningful space next season, which means the market for White and Dosunmu could become rather competitive.

So this takes us back to the tough decision. It’s hard to see a world where keeping both White and Dosunmu past this trade deadline makes sense. As the Bulls look to continue to reinvent this roster, turning at least one into future assets would be the responsible move. At least for now, the Bulls do seem to realize that, as Chicago Sports Network’s K.C. Johnson gave us some insight on the front office’s recent thinking.

Bulls’ Ayo Dosunmu Destined for More Trade Buzz?

In a recent conversation with Stacey King on the Gimme the Hot Sauce Podcast, K.C. Johnson spoke about the Bulls’ looming roster decisions. He went on to specifically mention Ayo Dosunmu as a player the front office has already looked into moving.

“I know for a fact the Bulls were involved in some pretty advanced trade talks with Ayo this past offseason that they couldn’t finalize. So they’re thinking [about] this, whether or not they can get the right deal remains to be seen.

I should preface or emphasize: The Bulls love both Ayo and Coby. Love them. They both fit what they’re trying to do. They’re extremely valued internally.”

For what it’s worth, the Dosunmu rumors are not new. His name surfaced a couple of times this summer and was specifically tied to the Lakers. Johnson himself has even previously made mention of the trade talks, but he went on to say in early August that he expected the guard to be back in the mix.

Still, Johnson mentioning this again so close to the start of the season speaks volumes about what could transpire in the lead-up to the trade deadline. Dosunmu is pretty clearly the frontrunner to be dealt, and it sure sounds like there might already be an understood framework out there in the market.

Indeed, this news puts that much more pressure on Dosunmu’s return from a season-ending shoulder surgery. If the guard can continue to build on his career-high marks from last season, who’s to say a team doesn’t come calling ready to meet the Bulls’ demands?

If one thing is for sure, the fact that there is expected to be so much money available next summer could be both a positive and a negative for the Bulls in negotiations. An organization with ample spending power may keep its offer pretty low because of the ability to make a run at Dosunmu in the summer. Conversely, those contending teams with less money may be desperate to jump the line in an effort to convince Dosunmu to stay with them during the second half of next season. It will be up to the Bulls to properly navigate those different conversations and try to find maximum value. I know … scary!

We also shouldn’t forget that things can always change. While Dosunmu certainly feels like the No. 1 player on the trade block right now, what happens on the court will always have a big impact. For all we know, Coby White can come out looking like an All-Star and completely change the phone lines. That’s why this upcoming season will be so gosh darn fascinating! The Bulls may not be anyone’s must-watch team, but the decisions they make in the coming weeks/months will be huge for the future of the franchise.
