From Oct. 8-12, eight Crimson Tide men’s tennis players competed in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Southern Regional Championships in Auburn.
Across the five-day event, competitors battled in the 64-player singles and doubles main draws in an effort to qualify for the NCAA Individual Championships. Both draws were single-elimination and featured top collegiate talent from all across the southeastern United States.
Alabama kicked off its quest to the NCAA Championships on Thursday in the qualifying bracket for singles.
Rohan Hazratwala advanced to the main draw without taking the court after a first-round bye and a second-round walkover. Freshman Theo Hegarty won a competitive three-setter over Tulane’s Steven Rice before falling to Gaku Nayuki of Samford in the second qualifying round, ending his singles campaign early. Another Crimson Tide freshman, Aleksander Blus, became the second Alabama player to earn a spot in the main draw after a dominant 6-1, 6-3 victory in his lone qualifying match.
In the main draw, Alabama saw four of its seven competitors make it beyond the first round.
Freshman Antonio Voljavec won a tightly contested 7-6, 7-6 first-round match before falling in straight sets to Freddy Blaydes of Auburn, an experienced senior. Senior transfer Braden Hannig fared similarly, winning in three sets in the first round then falling in three sets in the second.
The talented sophomore Yoshka Sborowsky was the first Alabama player to advance to Saturday singles play. After a routine straight-set victory in the first round, Sborowsky won in comfortable 4-6, 6-3, 6-0 fashion over Mississippi State’s Segundo Zapico, the tenth seed in the draw. In the third round, he fell in straight sets to fifth-seeded Igor Kudriashov.
The most impressive singles effort came from returning junior Matic Krinik, who advanced to the third-place match of the same tournament a year ago.
The one-seed in singles opened his quest in Auburn with a pair of three-set victories in the first and second rounds. On Saturday, a comfortable 6-1, 6-3 win against Kai Milburn of Ole Miss clinched a quarterfinal berth for the Slovenian. Like Sborowsky, Kriznik fell to Kudriashov, who would secure a spot in the final the following day in straight-set fashion.
Overall, the Crimson Tide found more consistent success in doubles play, with all four doubles pairings making it to at least the third round.
The duos of Hannig and Kalina, Hazratwala and Sborowsky and Kriznik and Voljavec all bore similar fates. Each duo had a bye in the first round, a comfortable second-round victory, and a third-round loss.
The talk of the tournament for the Crimson Tide came from the standout doubles effort of Blus and Hegarty.
The two newcomers cruised into the semifinals, dropping no more than five games in any of the eight-game, superset matches. In the semifinal, which was best-of-three sets, the two comfortably knocked off Luciano Alcocer and Gabriel Garay of Troy 6-1, 7-5.
With a chance to secure a spot in the NCAA Doubles Championships, the pair took on Ole Miss’ Kudriashov and Milburn. Despite an impressive effort, the two were outlasted in a competitive 3-6, 6-7 straight-set loss.
While the two did not qualify for the NCAA Championships, their run to the final in one of the first tournaments of their college careers could possibly be a sign of good things to come for Alabama men’s tennis.
