Opinion .. Instagram, employers share a similar role: fun squashers ...Middle East

Think about the last time you did something fun. Something that was truly just for the enjoyment of it and did not have any ulterior motive or driving factor.

Real enjoyment that wasn’t for a resume or a requirement for an organization or to curate an image of yourself on social media. Unfortunately, Gen Z is crushed by outside pressures and internal feelings to never be able to do anything just for the fun of it anymore, meaning many Gen Zers have a difficult time thinking of an answer to this question.

Having fun is an extremely important part of life. Fun powers creativity, lowers stress and has the potential to improve physical and mental health significantly. Certain pressures Gen Z is experiencing, including social media, the job market and finances, can taint the purity of fun and eradicate its helpful impacts. If this generation is always having fun with something else in mind, it defeats the purpose of having fun.

Having fun can be going to a football game, a volunteer event or a night out with friends. However, these are all things that could double as an Instagram post or resume builder, which is precisely the problem. People need to start playing board games, reading books or doing these other things because they bring joy, not because they feel as though they need to.

As for those pressures, the job market is more difficult for fresh post-grads than it has been in decades. This motivates college students to have a jam-packed resume, meaning less time doing things for fun and more time at club meetings, volunteering or working.

This is not to say that the aforementioned activities are inherently boring  simply because they can be added to a resume, but it shows that young adults of today are never just having fun. There’s always a thought lurking in the back of Gen Zers’ minds: How will their actions and activities reflect on their image, whether professional or social?

In addition to the pressures of the job market, there are serious issues relating to social media. Today, going out with friends is much more high-stakes than it was 30 years ago; then, you could make mistakes freely without the fear of being posted all over social media.

Not only does social media carry a certain kind of pressure to always act perfectly  for fear of a video or picture being posted of you, but it also creates a comparison game between peers. One study shows that almost three-fourths of Gen Z will compare something as specific as their smile to others they see on social media sites.

Gen Zers feel the need to curate a certain image of themselves on social media by posting many of their fun activities. These lead to a comparison game, which is extremely detrimental and can directly impact mental health and positive self image.

Outside of these pressures, there is an economic pressure on Gen Z because inflation and higher living costs are making it more difficult to have a traditional social life. Despite the rise in economic issues, there are pressures caused by social media to continue to live a social lifestyle.

Internships are in high demand, and only a little over half of them pay. The job market seeks applicants with internship experiences, and social media asks for a curated image while the economy makes demands that cannot be fulfilled.

All in all, it is extremely difficult for members of Generation Z to do anything purely for the fun of it anymore. Between the pressures of the job market, social media’s influence on self-image and the rise in inflation and living expenses, it is so hard to do things just for fun.
