Q&A with Homecoming candidate Savannah Strong ...Middle East

News by : (The Crimson White) -

Savannah Strong is a senior majoring in philosophy from Lincoln, Alabama, running for University of Alabama Homecoming Queen 2026.

Q: What are your involvements on and off campus?

A: On campus, I am in a sorority. It’s Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated. It’s our Theta Sigma undergraduate chapter. Among other things that I’m involved in, I’m also a President’s Cabinet Scholar, part of the inaugural cohort class. I’m also part of our Student Government Association. I serve under our executive cabinet as our Director of Engagement, and then I’m also in our SOURCE Board of Governors.

Q: What made you decide to want to run for Homecoming Queen?

A: I definitely feel like there’s always a need for service to be met — especially just growing up within AKA and even with my community as well. But what truly inspired my desire to even run for Homecoming Queen is that there’s always a need to access modern education. And so when it comes to just the literacy crisis in Alabama, I believe that reading is definitely a gateway when it comes to people’s perspectives with education, and so being able to keep up with those modern ways of learning is really important to me.

Q: What is your platform, and why did you decide to run on said platform?

A: Still Strong is definitely different, and so what my campaign is all about is really aiming to decrease the illiteracy rates in Alabama. And so when it comes to Tuscaloosa, what is really surprising is that around 20% to 25% of the population cannot read above a fourth-grade reading level. Which, as shameful as that is, I really want to make sure that every student feels heard, and regardless of what their walk of education looks like — whether it’s at the very bottom or at the very top — of just being able to provide means of access to them for reading and education.

Q: How have you served the community in your time as a student?

A: Yeah, 100 %. I feel like service is at the very top, especially just being a senior and being able to really walk all the four years of just seeing what Tuscaloosa’s like over the past four years. And so, mainly I do that through my sorority, through Theta Sigma. We’ve actually gone to serve out through Crimson Village, even if it’s just painting their nails or even just being able to read to younger kids in the community has been very, very important to me. But then also, I’m a [J. Frank Barefield Jr.] College of Arts and Sciences ambassador, and so we really do make sure to serve our community by talking to donors and trying to secure scholarships for current students who are in need.

Q: Why do you believe you’re the best choice for Homecoming Queen?

A: I believe I’m the best choice for Homecoming Queen because I believe that reading is truly authentic to the soul. I believe that whether we see a Bible scripture or whether we see anything on social media, it truly does digest in our everyday and day-to-day lives. And so throughout advocating for this, I truly believe that people who simply don’t know where to start with reading or can’t find a place through their reading is why I want to advocate for them.
