UA psychology student hosts speed dating event on campus ...Middle East

In a culture deeply immersed in technology, finding a connection can be as simple as a single swipe on a dating app. Braden Hall, a PhD student in the Department of Psychology studying social psychology, is challenging this idea through face-to-face speed dating events on campus.

His research focuses on romantic initiation through the effects of personality, technology and other external factors. He said it is difficult to study dating behavior in the real world, and that speed dating events allow researchers to observe dating behaviors in close proximity.

“I see two major potential limitations of modern dating behavior. One, the proliferation of online dating has given us so many options that we find it impossible to pick anyone,” Hall said. “The second limitation I see is an aversion to rejection or failure … an aversion to this leap of faith has led to the situationship epidemic.”

In modern dating, technology makes meaningful connections difficult due to short-attention spans and distractions. Speed dating offers more “chances of success” because the people at the event are interested in seeking a relationship.

“Approaching someone in the bar requires a lot of courage, and the situation is very unpredictable,” Hall said. “In speed-dating, I’m putting the person right in front of you. And you’re both here with a desire to date, or at least to meet new people.”

Although humans are becoming increasingly dependent on technology, Hall said humans still crave in-person interaction and dating apps fail to compensate for this internal desire.

“We have evolved numerous skills such as reading body language, responding to conversation, detecting tone and reading faces,” Hall said. “We can only stretch these evolutionary muscles in real-life interactions.”

In order to sign up for the event, participants must go to the website and click the sign-up link. The page will direct the participant to a “recruitment and eligibility” page, which ensures the participant is a student at the University.

Participants will be directed to their student email and will fill out a pre-event survey that has questionnaires and personality assessments. Hall said the event is clearly labeled as a study for the Department of Psychology, and participants are able to drop at any time throughout the process.

“Perhaps I’m a bit of a romantic, but I wish more people dove headfirst into dating people they were interested in and went on actual dates,” Hall said. “Right now, we have heterosexual events scheduled for Oct. 14 and 25, and we will schedule more in November.”
