A 16-year-old boy was taken into custody after witnesses reported seeing him handling a gun inside a corn maze at a Kenosha County pumpkin farm, authorities said.
The incident was reported around 8:03 p.m. on Friday at the Jerry Smith Pumpkin Farm, 7150 18th St., in unincorporated Kenosha.
The Kenosha County Sheriff’s Office said witnesses notified farm staff after seeing the teen with the gun. Security personnel said the juvenile fled when they approached him, but was later detained while trying to leave the property.
The 16-year-old later admitted to deputies he had possessed the gun, but got rid of it in the maze while fleeing.
A sheriff’s deputy and K-9 tracked the teen’s path through the maze and eventually located an empty 30-round magazine and a 9 mm handgun nearby. The handgun was unloaded, and the magazine contained no ammunition, authorities said.
Deputies also found a vape pen that allegedly belonged to the juvenile. A field test indicated the presence of THC, sheriff’s officials said.
The sheriff’s office said it is seeking the following charges: disorderly conduct while armed, carrying a concealed weapon, possession of a dangerous weapon by a person under 18 and possession of THC.
The teen was released to a parent with housing restrictions at the direction of Kenosha County Juvenile Court Intake.
An investigation remains underway.
