Cubs Prospects Report | August 19, 2026

Triple-A Iowa Cubs

It was a rough one for the Iowa Cubs on Tuesday night as they fell 9-2 to the Toledo Mud Hens (Tigers). Braxton Garrett started on the mound for the Cubs and had another tough outing. The trade deadline add got roughed up over four innings of work, allowing five earned runs on six hits and a walk. On the plus side, he did strike out five.

After the Cubs opened the scoring in the top of the first on a Chas McCormick RBI single, the Mud Hens answered with three runs in the second and two more in the third to make it 5-1 early. The score stayed at 5-1 until the seventh when Toledo added a solo homer off Shelby Miller, putting the score at 6-1. After McCormick homered for his second RBI of the night in the eighth, Toledo put the game away, plating three runs of their own off Evan Taylor in the bottom half of the inning.

Double-A Knoxville Smokies (Delayed)

Honestly, I had to do a double take when checking this box score. The Knoxville Smokies and Pensacola Blue Wahoos (Marlins) saw their game suspended due to rain after just one inning of play on Tuesday. While having a suspended game due to rain in the summer in Florida isn’t abnormal, the Smokies having a 9-0 lead absolutely is!

Knoxville erupted for a nine-run frame in the top of the first. Alex Ramírez and Edgar Alvarez each had two-RBI singles. Alex Madera brought in a run on a groundout. Then Drew Bowser had an RBI single. Lastly, Andy Garriola had the big blast with a three-run homer with two on and two out. The game will be resumed on Wednesday, followed by the regularly-scheduled Thursday matchup.

High-A South Bend Cubs

The South Bend Cubs picked up a 5-1 series-opening win over the West Michigan Whitecaps (Tigers) thanks to a late offensive surge and some really good pitching. The Whitecaps got on the board first with a solo homer in the opening frame off Jostin Florentino. But other than that mistake, Florentino was outstanding. He went five innings, allowed just the one hit and one run, only walked one batter, and struck out seven. Following him, Brayden Spears, Adam Stone, and Yoendris Gonzalez combined to keep the Whitecaps hitless the rest of the way over the final four innings.

Trailing 1-0 in the second, Kade Snell got the Cubs back to even with a solo homer, making it 1-1. That’s how the score stayed until the bottom of the sixth. That’s when Josiah Hartshorn took over. In the sixth, Hartshorn blasted his 14th home run of the season. The two-run homer made it 3-1. Then, in the eigth, Hartshorn struck again with an RBI single, increasing the advantage to 4-1. Later in the inning, a Matt Halbach sacrifice fly put a bow on this one, giving South Bend a 5-1win.

Low-A Myrtle Beach Pelicans

Wrapping up the action, the Myrtle Beach Pelicans dropped their series opener to the Fayetteville Woodpeckers 10-7. The squads took turns trading big innings in this one. With the score at 0-0 in the second, Fayetteville got on the board first with a three-run homer off Kevin Camacho, who lasted just 1.1 innings.

Trailing 3-0 in the fourth, it was the Pelicans’ turn to put up a big number. First, an Eli Lovich one-out single brought in Myrtle Beach’s first run of the ballgame. A few batters later, Jan Luis Reyes drew a bases-loaded walk to cut the deficit to 3-2. Juan Cabada was the next batter, and he brought in two more with a single, giving the Pelicans their first lead of the game.

Unfortunately, in the sixth, the Woodpeckers fired back with a four-run frame of their own, with all of those runs being credited to Victor Zarraga. The score now sat at 7-4 in favor of Fayetteville. In the bottom half of the frame, though, the Pelicans fought back. RBI singles from Ivan Cespedes and Cabada cut the deficit to 7-6.

After a scoreless seventh, though, the Woodpeckers got to Jordan Henriquez for a run in the eighth, then they picked up two more off Sam Mettert in the ninth. While the Pelicans did score a run on a wild pitch in the bottom of the ninth, they ultimately came up short and fell 10-7.
