There will be no guessing about who will start at quarterback for the Chicago Bears when they travel to Green Bay this week. During his weekly Monday hit with ESPN 1000, head coach Ben Johnson confirmed that Tyson Bagent will get his second straight start on Sunday.
This afternoon, he spoke with reporters and delivered some updates on two key players: Caleb Williams and Kyle Monangai. Williams, of course, has been sidelined since Week 2 with a hamstring injury, while Monangai suffered a hand injury late in Sunday’s victory over the Jets.

Johnson said Williams will not practice this week as he continues to deal with a Grade 2 hamstring strain, and the team still considers him “week-to-week,” with his earliest return date now the Bears’ Week 6 matchup against the Atlanta Falcons.
I would be much more concerned about this if Chicago hadn’t run a dominant rushing attack through the Jets and used Ben Johnson’s game-planning wizardry to torch the Eagles last week with Case Keenum. And it helps that the defense has been suffocating in back-to-back weeks.
I would imagine that if the last two weeks hadn’t gone as well as they did, there would be some more conversation about how soon Williams would or should be back. Thankfully, the Bears have put themselves in a position to be as patient as they need to be.
As for Monangai, Johnson believes he’ll be fine.
Monangai suffered a thumb injury late in his dominant 146-yard, two-touchdown performance against New York on Sunday. Johnson called the injury a “day-to-day” issue during a 15-minute Zoom call with reporters on Monday.
So, Williams is out, Bagent is in, and Monangai sounds like he’ll be fine for Sunday’s trip to Lambeau Field.
